Scholars honored
for perfect GPAs
By Lesley Owusu
Staff writer
Imagine not receiving anything
lower than an “A” your entire college
career.
Thirty-three University of
Nebraska-Lincoln seniors and recent
graduates have been honored for
doing just that.
They were named Chancellor’s
Scholars for earning perfect 4.0
grade point averages throughout
their academic careers at UNL.
All honorees will graduate
Saturday or received their diplomas
in August or December 1999.
Among the scholars are former
Husker football player Brian Shaw
and All-American track athlete Janet
Dutton.
Matthew Miller, a biochemistry
major, said his hard work in the
classroom paid off.
“When I was a freshman, my goal
was to strive hard to go to medical
school,” he said. “In order to achieve
that, I knew I would have to stay
focused and excel in the classroom.”
Miller, who will graduate in just
three years, said he has never strug

Matthew Johnson, a business
major being honored, said he
believes that a well-balanced work
ethic, dedication and student
involvement are the essential ingre
dients for achieving academic excel
lence.
“A good college experience is the
greatest fulfillment a student can
have,” he said.
Johnson said students need to
have a good and relaxed attitude
toward college.
“Through good attendance, hard
work, discipline and student involve
ment, anyone can achieve a high
GPA,” he said.
Miller is proud of his accom
plishments, and he encouraged all
students simply to try hard in the
classroom, and the grades will come.
“Students should not put a premi
um on grades,” he said. “College is a
learning experience and should be
enjoyable.”
gled maintaining his academic excel
lence.
“I’ve always worked hard in the
classroom by taking classes that I
enjoy,” he said. “I never planned to
earn a perfect GPA, it just came natu
rally.”
Miller said he believes that a col
lege education is important because
it gives people the opportunity to Be
exposed to a variety of subjects and
opportunities.
Dutton, a business administra
tion major, said she is excited to be
graduating.
“I’ve always found it challenging
balancing my athletics and my aca
demics,” she said.
Dutton said she has flourished
because of two reasons.
“Expert planning and good
organization is what has helped me
through my college career,” she said.
Dutton gets her motivation from
an internal drive to succeed, and she
never limits herself, she said.
The 23-year-old believes that
high grades are not everything.

recruiters still exists throughout the
industry,” Riddering said. “There
might be cracks in the ‘glass ceiling,’
but we have to make sure that it does
not crash on top of us.”
Susan Broyles, an English senior,
said the statistical increase may trick
people into assuming that the barrier
has been surpassed and thereby
cause a general lack of concern
toward other critical issues facing
women in the workforce including a
wage gap in all ranks, not only exec
utive positions.
“It’s progress, but there are a lot
of other ways of measuring the
efforts of women in the workforce,”
said Broyles, a chairwoman of the
Feminist Majority Leadership
Alliance, a UT organization that
works in defense of feminist ideals
and issues on campus.
