Lincoln festivities offer cure for warm-weather blues By Emily Pyeatt Staffwriter This summer, events in Lincoln are packed with traditional festivals and also offer some cool opportunities. Many of the events are similar in that all seem to offer an abundance of food and entertainment in the summer months. The Lincoln Farmer’s Market will begin its 16th year in May. Lincoln’s largest farmer’s market is different this year, yet customers can still buy pro duce, flowers and crafts every Saturday from May 6 through October 28 from 8 a.m. to noon at Eighth and P streets. “This year, we are expanding our territory from its Seventh Street loca tion in the all the way up to the Mill,” said Ballene Nemec, the Haymarket’s director. 1 he expanded market consists of nearly 110 vendors and live entertain ment. This year, look for additions including a mushroom-and-oyster booth, more Nebraska meat products and sherbet made from goat’s milk. Other one-time events offer differ ent kinds of fun. A Fun Run sponsored by Frontier Lincoln Harley Owners Group benefit ing the Muscular Dystrophy Association will be held May 13th. The event, called the “Harley Ride Benefits Muscular Dystrophy,” will be complete with festivities from 3 to 11 p.m., including a performance by the H QJ B S g local blues band Blue House. Lincolnites will have the chance to step into the past with a Renaissance Fair and Festival on May 20th at James Arthur Vineyards located north of Lincoln. The third annual festival will present period displays and Renaissance demonstrations from noon to 8 p.m. by the Lincoln Society for Creative Anachronism. Jim Ballard, a spokesperson for the Renaissance event, said this year’s revival will consist of authentic events including combat demonstrations with actors in full armor, artisans explaining their craft, juggling and magic by Paul Lefeber, music by local high school choirs and the musician Chris Sayre and of course, wine tasting. “This year will also feature archery and a kids’ area so children can create crafts,” Ballard said. Admission is $ 1 or a donation of one can of food that will benefit the Lincoln Food Bank. After June 1, the Roca Berry Farm offers strawberry picking and an oppor tunity to purchase jellies, jams, crafts and dried flowers. The farm is open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekends. Antelope Park will offer free con certs at the John Schildneck Bandshell every Thursday through Sunday from June 1 to Aug. 27. The concerts, which change throughout the summer, all begin at 7 p.m. Antelope Park is located south on Memorial Drive from A Street. Another series of free concerts sponsored by the Nebraska Art Association will be held in the Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery Sculpture Garden every Tuesday night in June from 7 to 9 p.m. The series, titled “Jazz in June,” will feature the UNL Jazz Quintet com posed of university faculty members, The Nebraska Jazz Orchestra, The Matt Wallis Band and Angela Hagenbach with her Kansas City Sextet. Cathy Piper, director of the Nebraska Arts Association, said some of the groups have played in the past, but one, the UNL Jazz Quintet, is mak ing its first appearance. Piper advised concert-goers to arrive to the Sculpture Gardens early to get a place to sit. “People traditionally bring lawn chairs and picnic blankets for a unique atmosphere,” Piper said. The Sheldon Art Gallery is open before and during the performances. The Haymarket Heydays event is traditionally comparable to a larger ver sion of the Farmer’s Market plus stage entertainment, block parties, family food vendors and family entertainment. Located in the Haymarket, The Heydays will take place June 16-18. The Fourth of July Celebration is Lincoln’s next largest citywide event, complete with a fun run, live music, children’s games and a fireworks dis play in the evening. Mary Schnell, a spokeswoman for Lincoln Parks, said the day adds up for one big finale. “The various activities all lead up to the huge fireworks show that night,” she said. The Fourth of July Celebration will be held at Holmes Lake. This year’s July Jamm will be a tra ditional street festival packed with food vendors and stages for various live entertainment performances. The Jamm will be held July 27-29 down town at 12th and N streets. A three-day festival of Czech her itage will begin August’s events. Czech Days promises at least 10 polka bands and food at the Pla Mor Ballroom on August 11-13. The Air Fest 2000 will coincide with the Czech Days Festival, but will offer re-enactments of different air show's by the Nebraska Air and Army National Guard. The show begins at 11 a.m. at the Lincoln Air Park. The final festival of the summer consists of four days of eating. The Capital City Rib Fest on August 17 20 will offer rib vendors from across the nation and live entertainment. The public can sample the food and vote for its favorites outside of Pershing Auditorium on N Street between 16™ Street and Centennial Mall. Although Lincoln lacks students during the summer months, it still offers a lot of entertainment for those who remain in the capital city.
