another home run to get it started. This
time it was from senior Jennifer
Williams. With two outs in the second
inning, William belted a solo shot, her
third of the season to put the Huskers on
top 1-0.
That was all senior Jenny Voss (14

mound for Nebraska. NU gave Voss
one more insurance run when Lizama
jacked another home run, this time a
solo shot off the Aggie scoreboard.
With the sweep of Texas A&M, the
Huskers move into their final homes

Blazers, Lakers, Knicks
score series game wins
Los Angeles 117 Sacramento

LOS ANGELES (AP) — It’s
been Shaquille O’Neal’s season, and
if what happened Sunday is an accu
rate indication, the playoffs might be
his, too.
O’Neal equaled a career playoff
high with 46 points and also had 17
rebounds and five blocked shots as
the Los Angeles Lakers opened the
playoffs with a 117-107 victory over
the pesky Sacramento Kings.
Game 2 in the best-of-five series
will be played Thursday night, and
Sacramento is home for the third
game next Sunday.
Kobe Bryant scored 23 points
and Glen Rice 18 for the Lakers.
Chris Webber, limited by fouls to
27 minutes, led the Kings with a
career playoff-high 28 points and
five rebounds before fouling out
with 6:53 left.
Jason Williams added 20 points
and Tony Delk 17.
The Kings trailed by six with 4Vi
minutes to play before the Lakers
scored six straight to put them away.
The Kings trailed by 16 points
when Webber fouled out but scored
10 straight to make it 105-99. But
that’s as close as the Kings would get.
Bryant beat the shot clock with a
jumper, and, after Vlade Divac

made a short bank shot and a dunk to
make it 111-99 with 3:03 left.
Webber picked up his fifth foul,
and a technical as well, with 1:14 left
in the third quarter and the Lakers up
86-76. It was 91-79 entering the final
period, and Webber fouled out two
seconds after returning to the game.
New York 92 Toronto 88
NEW YORK (AP) — Vince
Carter won’t have any fond memo
ries of his first playoff game, not
after missing 17 shots - including his
first dozen.
Carter learned a harsh lesson
about playoff basketball Sunday. He
played one of his worst games of the
season as the Toronto Raptors lost
the first postseason game in fran
chise history, 92-88 to the New York
Knicks.
Carter scored 16 points but shot
3-for-20 from the field. He also went
9-for-10 at the line, with the one miss
a huge one after he was flagrantly
fouled with 40 seconds left and the
Raptors trailing by three. Toronto
didn’t score again until 2.5 seconds
remained, and by then it was too late.
The Knicks, after blowing an
early 19-point lead, wrapped it up at
the foul line to take Game 1 of the
best-of-five series. Game 2 is

Allan Houston and Latrell
Sprewell scored 21 points apiece for
New York, Patrick Ewing and Larry
Johnson had 15 each and Chris
Childs 12.
Johnson hit the game’s biggest
shot, a 3-pointer with 43 seconds left
that put New York ahead to stay. Then
came the moment when Carter failed
to redeem himself for a forgettable
afternoon.
After Carter’s one free throw
sunk, Toronto missed three straight
baskets. New York rebounded the last
try and wrapped up the victory from
the line.
McGrady had 25 points to lead
the Raptors, who shot only 37 per
cent from the field.
Portland 91 Minnesota 88
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) —
Scottie Pippen displayed old, famil
iar playoff determination, and the
young Minnesota Timberwolves
showed they still have a lot to learn
Sunday.
Pippen scored 28 points and hit
two crucial free throws after being
knocked to the floor with 1:26 left as
the Portland Trail Blazers rallied to
defeat the Timberwolves 91-88 in
Game 1 of the best-of-five playoff
series.
