It also incorporates a long lost text written in 1903 by a professor of criminology that may have influ enced Sherlock Holmes. Shields is a graduate of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Hilda Raz, a UNL professor of English and an organizer of the event, said Shields was excited to come back to her alma mater. “She was eager to come here,” Raz said. “We are her home city.” After leaving Nebraska, Shields became an editor at The New York Times, House and Garden, Details and Vogue. She is the author of two nonfic tion fashion books. She has also worked for L’ Oreal and Lancome in public relations. While working at Vogue, she wrote about couture fashion and interviewed celebrities such as Karl Lagerfeld and Gucci’s Tom Ford. She left the fashion business and auctioned her own couture clothing col lection to pay rent while writing. In addition to her fashion back ground, Shields also has artwork in the collection of the Museum of Modem Art, among other institutions. Her novel recently sold at auction to Little Brown for nearly half a million dollars, and Mirimax purchased the film rights. Raz said many students will find Shields an inspiration. “She is the perfect example of the talented undergrad who doesn’t want to specialize in just one thing,” Raz said. “She seemed to be going in one direc tion and did that for a while and then broke off, changed and hit it big, and she’s not done yet. She’s a great role model.” Daily Nebraskan $5.25/15 words 20 Nebraska Union M *jp A *p'| ^ *p v $3.50/15 words (students) (402)472-2588 1 I /% I H I H I lW $0.15 each additional word FAX* (402) 472-1761 I i/A 1 1 l7j I A I Cl 1 7l I $0‘75 biUing char®e dn@unl.edu J-A.
