Alumni may buy Big Red Shop

Within the next few years, the
best seating for Comhusker football
games may not be the skyboxes in
Memorial Stadium.
Instead, Nebraska alumni may
have the opportunity to become
members of the Nebraska Alumni
Association Champions Club.
The Nebraska Alumni
Association announced Tuesday it
- has signed an option to purchase the
privately owned Big Red Shop,
which is across the street from the
stadium on Stadium Drive.
Plans are contingent on parking
approval from the NU Board of
Regents and fulfilling a minimum
number of memberships.
If all goes according to plan, the
Big Red Shop will be tom down and
a new facility will be constructed in
its place, said Ed Paquette, executive
director of the Nebraska Alumni
Association.
The Champions Club is set to
accommodate 1,500 people and will
feature an open-air pavilion with
restrooms on the lower level and an
enclosed space to be used for meet
ings or conferences year-round on
the upper level, Paquette said.

A 25-year membership to the
club will cost $20,000, and the
Alumni Association is projecting an
additional $500 annual fee per mem
ber for maintenance costs, Paquette
said.
Each member will be given 12
guest passes on home football game
days and be able to watch the game
via HuskerVision, as well as pre- and
post-game coverage, Paquette said.
The Alumni Association decided
to purchase the Big Red Shop
because the Wick Alumni Center is
not large enough to accommodate all
the alumni for home football games,
he said.
“Nebraska alumni love their
Husker football,” he said.
Paquette also said the Wick
Alumni Center has to turn away 20 to
25 weddings per year because of a
lack of space, another problem that
can be solved by the Champions
Club.
In order for the plan to come to
life, the Alumni Association must
sell 180 Champions Club member
ships by mid-July.
Paquette said 31 memberships
already have been committed.
Another perk of the club will be
added university parking, Paquette
said.
The Big Red Shop currently
owns about 50 parking spaces, and

they will be purchased along with the
shop itself.
For the majority of the year, these
new spaces will be university park
ing, but on game days they will be
used for Champions Club member
parking.
Because of this, the Alumni
Association also needs the approval
of the University of Nebraska Board
of Regents to lease the parking spots.
If plans work out, construction
will begin in early 2001, and the club
will be set to open for the fall 2001
football season, Paquette said.
The Big Red Shop will continue
business as usual for the 2000-01
school year, Paquette said.
The Champions Club will be uti
lized in the same manner on non
game days as the Wick Alumni.
Center: It will be open to any student
or university group who requests its
usage.
The club will be financed by
member dues and corporate sponsor
ships, Paquette said.
Regent Robert Allen of Hastings
said the project is worthwhile,
despite its expensive price tag.
Allen also mentioned the bene
fits of the added parking the
Champions Club will create for the
university.
“I think this will be a real plus for
the university,” he said.
