BOSTON (AP) - Each week, the “Antiques Roadshow” features a story that seems too good to be true, as someone finds out that their piece of “junk” is actually a valuable treas ure. The rags-to-riches stories are part of the charm of the public television show in which regular people have their wares appraised by antiques experts. But producers said that in one instance, what seemed too good to be true was just that. On Thursday, the show cut ties to two experts who staged “an extravagant deception” that violated the show’s premise. “I think they thought they were helping the show, but they were wrong,” said Peter McGhee, vice president of national programs at WGBH-TV in Boston, which pro duces “Antiques Roadshow.” The incident occurred during the show’s debut season in 1997. A man showed an appraiser a Civil War sword found in his attic that he used to cut watermelon. Appraisers were delighted when presented with the weapon and told the man it was worth $35,000. But the two appraisers - George Juno and Russ Pritchard - actually knew the man who brought in the sword, and they knew the sword’s his tory, show officials said. McGhee said the station was cut ting ties with Juno and Pritchard and removing them from segments in future shows and shows that might be rerun. “Our objective at this point is to deny them any further benefit from association with the ‘Roadshow,’” McGhee said. Juno, contacted at his business in Allentown, Pa., denied any wrongdo ing and said the station had been pres sured by rival experts in the antiques business. “There were no fake interviews. ... There was never proof,” he said. “It was pressure put on the station by our competitors in an attempt to get us off the show.” He added, “We still think very highly of WGBH and think the ‘Roadshow’ is a great thing.” Pritchard, who has a business near Philadelphia, did not return telephone or pager messages Thursday. “Antiques Roadshow” is watched by about 14 million people each week and has gained such popularity that it was used as a premise for an episode of the sitcom “Frasier,” McGhee said. The show travels around the coun try, allowing thousands of people to show up at tapings to have items examined by dozens of appraisers. Appraisers who think they have a good story and a good item approach the shoW’s producers. About 15 to 20 segments are included in each show. The appraisers aren’t paid but gain national publicity if they appear on the program.
