Traveling exhibit offers something new JOSLYN from page 9 said. “The work is so unique, and die Joslyn was very detailed! jA providing information, so it was a history lesson and an art lesson at the same time. “It was a really neat thing to have.” The Joslyn’s Maximilian-Bodmer collection is world-renowned and col orfully presented in the Joslyn’s Print Gallery. For the most part, Maximilian and Bodmer functioned as a team, chroni cling the people and places of young America. Maximilian made numerous observations about the life, language and rituals of American Indian tribes like the Omaha, Sioux, Assinibion, Blackfoot, Mandan and Hidatsa. While Maximilian was conduct ing his research and observations, Bodmer was employed to make detailed drawings of what he saw. Later, much of his work ended up as printed illustrations for Maximilian’s published journal, “Travels in the Interior of North America, 1832-34.” Today, they are considered as some of the most accomplished of all images of the early American West While the exhibited prints show many traditional style images of American Indians, there are also many that focus on specific elements of the different cultures, such as weapons or ceremonial garments. Because Broken Bow is a particu larly rural region, Birnie said the exhibit was well suited for the town. “It was also very well-received,” she said. “There was a lot of really great information there, and because this was such a part of Plains history, there was a lot of interest. “It was really appreciated.” ^ .Travels in the f* Interior of North V.
