University showcases research Fair offers students, public chance to view projects at Lincoln campus By John Hejkal Staff writer People interested in satisfying either their brains or their bellies will have their fill Saturday at the University Research and Creative Activity Fair. Some of the most outstanding research projects from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln will be on dis play at the fair, which will be held in the Centennial Room of the Nebraska Union. Besides the research presenta tions, attendees will be offered free root beer floats or other ice cream products. The fair will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will highlight faculty research from about 35 departments. It is part of the Centennial Celebration of Graduate Education, Research and Creative Activity. Robert Stock, chairman of the sub-committee for planning the fair, said it was a good chance for people to see the scope of faculty research at UNL. “This is the first time we’ve ever done this - had a fair that emphasizes graduate and faculty research,” he said. The fair is running in conjunction with the Undergraduate Research Conference and the Graduate Student Research Symposium, which start today in the College of Business Administration Building and the Wick Alumni Center, respec tively. Posters from the Undergraduate Conference and the Graduate Symposium will be on display throughout the day. Awards for the best presentations will be given from 2:30 to 3 p.m. Faculty will be at the fair to dis cuss their research and creative proj ects. Areas represented will range from the Dead Sea Scrolls and fic tion writing to global positioning systems and virology. Stock said the event should be a true celebration. “We wanted to make it a fair-like situation,” he said. “In other words, not just an academic situation as such but kind of a festive atmos phere.” Along with the ice cream, bal loons and other decorations should contribute to the festivities. Stock said he hoped such additions would help motivate students to attend. Still, the main emphasis will be on the progress the university faculty has made in various fields. Sidnie Crawford, professor and chairwoman of the classics and reli gious studies department, will be presenting her work on the Dead Sea Scrolls, which deal with the Hebrew Bible or Old Testament. Crawford, a member of an inter national publishing committee for the Scrolls, will be presenting texts where the Scrolls have been pub lished and photographs of the Scrolls. The classics and religious studies department will present studies on the Nag Hammadi, which are Gnostic texts in the Coptic language of ancient Egypt. Crawford said the fair offers a good opportunity for departments to see what activities are going on throughout the university. “We want people to realize the amount of research that we do for such a small department,” she said. “We want to shine our light a little bit at the university.” The department of classics and religious studies has seven faculty members. Patricia Cox Crews, professor ^ We want to shine our light a little bit at the university Sidnie Crawford classics, religious studies chairwoman and acting chairwoman of the depart ment of textiles, clothing and design, agreed it was a chance to see diverse projects. “It’s interesting to see the whole scope and breadth of the whole uni versity’s research and scholarly activities,” she said. Crews will be presenting her book “Nebraska Quilts and Quiltmaking” at the fair. The department of textiles, cloth ing and design will also feature a presentation on home-based busi nesses in textiles and apparel. In addition, they will have a PowerPoint presentation on sun-protective cloth ing. The fair will be free and open to the public.
