New architecture dean selected By Margaret Behm Staff writer The UNL architecture college will have a new dean starting this summer. Selecting a dean was difficult because more than one applicant in die national search was exceptional, said Brito Mutunayagam, interim dean. “We had three outstanding candi dates who were recommended to the senior vice chancellor (for academic affairs),” he said. After an extensive evaluation of the three candidates, Robert Wayne Drummond, who has been the architec ture dean at two universities, was selected. Drummond could not be reached for comment. Mutunayagam said Drummond will be a good addition to the college. “I think he will be an absolutely "Will employers care about my C In English ?" Cecil Steward, former dean of the College of Architecture, retired in December after 26 years. He continues to work part time for the university. Steward said he was satisfied with the selection of Drummond as the new dean. Drummond was a good choice because he is qualified as an educator and as a working architect, Steward said. “Because we have a very strong architecture practice in Nebraska,” he said, “it was very important that we picked someone who knew architecture practice as well as architecture educa tion.” Drummond is also well-known, Steward said. “People know him and respect him,” he said. “I think he’ll bring new ideas and new contacts to the school.” Though Steward retired in December, Drummond will not take over until July 1. Mutunayagam said that he would have preferred to have hired a new dean immediately. But the selection process took time, he said. “In an ideal world, someone would have been in there the day after (Steward) left,” he said. “However, all things don’t work ideally.” Mutunayagam said he was more concerned with finding the perfect dean than the amount of time the search took. “Even if it had taken six more months,” he said, “Drummond was worth waiting for.” Students participate in LeaderShape LEADERSHAPE from page 1 for leadership training in Illinois. LeaderShape was started for indi vidual campuses in the mid-’90s. UNL’s first LeaderShape was held in 1997 after Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs James Griesen heard about it, Baack said. UNL’s LeaderShape administrator is Marilyn Bugenhagen, the director of Student Involvement. The cost of UNL students’ atten dance is paid by university depart ments. About 55 to 60 UNL students usually come to LeaderShape; this year’s LeaderShape included two stu dents from Alcorn State University in Mississippi. The two students partici pate in an exchange program between UNL and Alcorn State. Johns said he knew three or four people at LeaderShape when the weekend started, but he enjoyed meeting new people. “One of those boys (from Alcorn State) was in my group, and he was really awesome. I was kind of sad when he left, but we’re e-mailing,” he said. Both Johns and Olsen said they • would do it again if they had the chance. “At the end, it’s not even a ques tion of whether you want to be here or in Cancun,” Olsen said.
