Rollins Band returns with lackluste By Josh Krauter * Staff writer Henry Rollins is an easy target. The former Black Flag and current Rollins Band vocalist is a big tattooed guy with ajutting, dimpled chin. He has been mining the same ‘1 love myself/I hate myself” schtik for nearly 20 years, with diminishing returns each time. And his sensitive tough guy persona is as predictable as an episode of “The Nanny.” Rollins is a giant bull’s eye on a small dart board, but give the man some credit. Black Flag’s 198 f release, “Damaged,” is one of the most frighten ing and powerful punk albums of all time, and the Rollins Band’s 1992 album, “The End of Silence,” got by with ominously talented musicianship. But that was fee Rollins Band of old. The new band is made up of all three members of Mother Superior, a Los Angeles band nobody’s heard of. And they’re not that bad. But they’re not that great, either. So goes “Get Some Go Again,” the new Rollins Band album. It’s not that bad, and it’s not that good. It’s a by-the numbers hard rock album for head bangers of non-discriminating taste and little else. Rollins is still singing (yelling?) about having a low self esteem because the world is too harsh, his girlfriend has left him and he doesn’t fit in or over coming his low self esteem even though the world is too harsh, his girlfriend has , left him and he doesn’t fit in. The album follows the same hard rock pattern for 45 minutes, with most of the songs indistinct from one another, including the Thin Lizzy cover, “Are You Ready.” Rollins Band Version 2.0 is a more generic, duller band than its pre decessor. That’s why the last track, “Illuminator,” is such a surprise. The song is a 15-minute diatribe against the current state of pop music that rides along on funk bass and guitars, aided by ex-MC5 guitarist Wayne Kramer. Itls also die funniest song of the year, though most of the humor is uninten tional. The song’s lyrics are as convolut ed and ridiculous as the plot of Oliver Stone’s “JFK.” And like “JFK,” its ridiculousness makes it compelling. Rollins talks over the funk, mostly about how fake and disposable the cur rent musical climate is, but the lyrical ramblings make less sense than the average demented lunatic’s. After taking potshots at a whole bunch of rock stars, Rollins begins talk ing about an ex-glam rock star who now works as a video store clerk. The ex rock star rents Rollins a video starring the rock star’s ex-girlfriend. According to Rollins, the woman “moves too fast for prime time.” Huh? What does this have to do with the rest of the song, or anything else? Later, Rollins sings, “Keep it real/Yeaahhhh/You always got to keep it ^■ Rollins Band ! g i TITLE: Get Some Go A9ain LABEL: Dreamworks Records f.i :i GRADE: C • FIVE WORDS: Rollins mmm goes nuts, mostly bores. real/Aaaaahhhh/Ha ha ha/Keep it real, man/Aaahhh ahhh/Ha ha/ Woooo!” These are only a few of the many sublimely ridiculous moments from this big, fat ridiculous song. It’s the sound of Rollins losing his marbles on record, and it almost makes “Get Some Go Again” worth buying. Almost.
