    Fliers warn campus
of possible danger
FLIERS from page 1 _
“We just decided that it was better
to let people know, rather than have
something bad happen and not have
shared the information we had,” Lewis
said.
Sanford was last seen after a court
appearance Tuesday where he was
fined $222 for stealing, said Wendy
Coppello, municipal court clerk of the
city ofWarrensburg, Mo.
He had just been released from
Missouri’s Johnson County Criminal
Justice Cotter on Monday.
Sanford is scheduled to appear in
court for an arraignment on Feb. 25 in
Arkansas for the alleged rape of a
University of Arkansas student, said
Shelly Friend, case coordinator for
Judge William Storey in Arkansas’
Circuit Court.
Authorities do not know Sanford’s
location, and records from Arkansas
show he has not been assigned a public
defender concerning the rape charges.
University of Arkansas Police Lt.
Gary Crain said Sanford was arrested
on Jan. 25 for allegedly raping a 19
year-old student late Jan. 22 or early
Jan. 23 in her room on the University
of Arkansas at Fayetteville campus.
Crain said that at the time of the
rape, Sanford was visiting the victim
and refused to leave when she asked;
he also refused to allow the victim to
leave.
Sanford was interviewed and
arrested on rape charges. He was also
arrested for false imprisonment -
holding the student against her will.
At the time of the arrest, Sanford
attempted to fight with officers, which
resulted in additional charges of resist
ing arrest, terroristic threats and disor
derly conduct, Crain said.
Sanford was booked into
Washington County Jail in Arkansas.
Lewis said Sanford has been

Scott Lewis
interim business and finance
vice chancellor
released on bond.
Since his arrest for the alleged
rape, Sanford faced charges in (
Missouri involving stolen items from
another female student - the charges
he was fined for Tuesday.
The Central Missouri State
University student told officers
Sanford had been her acquaintance
and had been staying with her for a
while, said Jeff Murphy, Central
Missouri State’s news bureau manag
er.
Sanford was arrested for the stolen
items on Feb. 2. He was wearing one of
the woman’s sweatshirts and her
watch, Murphy said.
After the woman had seen safety
fliers in a computer lab on the school’s
campus that warned about Sanford’s
past offenses, she alerted police about
the stolen items.
After Sanford’s arrest, Central
Missouri State University banned him
from their campus, Murphy said.
Lewis did not want to create hyste
ria on campus by posting the signs.
“This was really an attempt to
warn people that there might be a pos
sibility of danger and that they should
be aware of that danger,” he said.
Armed man eludes police after chase
By MicheDe Starr
Staff writer
Police say an armed man remains at
large after a high-speed pursuit
Wednesday morning.
The chase began when Lincoln
police were investigating a disturbance
reported Tuesday, which involved the
driver of Wednesday’s pursuit, Lincoln
Police Ofc. Katherine Finnell said.
Officers alerted businesses in the
area of 48th and Fremont streets -
where Lance McDaniel, 34, a homeless
man whose last known address was a
Norfolk city mission, was suspected to
be - that the suspect had a gun. Off"cers
received a call from Kabredlo’s
Convenience Store, 3560 N. 48th St.,
that McDaniel was in the store.
When McDaniel saw police, he
jumped into a white Chevrolet Blazer,
which had two other occupants, at
11:05 a.m. and took off northbound,
- Finnell said.
V
The two others jumped out at 48th
and Superior streets, Finnell said.
McDaniel, continuing north on
48th Street, proceeded on Highway 77
where Lancaster Sheriffs joined at
Highway 77 and Fletcher Street, said
Lancaster County Sheriff Sgt. Andrew
Stebbing.
Finnell said officers reported see
ing McDaniel hold a gun to his head.
The pursuit continued past Highway 77
and West Raymond Road, and
McDaniel went west on Davey Road,
Stebbing said.
Because the identity of the suspect
was known and because of the danger
of a high-speed chase, officers called
off the pursuit in the town of Davey.
The Blazer was abandoned at
12900 N.W. 98th Street. At about 11:50
a.m., a man reported that a man with a
handgun stole his 1979 white and green
Oldsmobile from the same place the
Blazer was found, Lancaster County
Sheriff Terry Wagner said.
The Oldsmobile was last seen west
bound on West Waverly Road at
Northwest 112* Street, Wagner said
Despite help from the Nebraska
State Patrol ground and air units,
authorities were unable to find
McDaniel on Wednesday.
During Tuesday’s disturbance at
2915 N. 46* St., the suspect allegedly
pointing a gun at Ronald Bennett - who
lived at the home - after the two argued.
McDaniel had been staying with
Bennett, Finnell said.
McDaniel - described as white, 6
feet tall, 170 pounds with brown hair
and eyes - had left by the time officers
arrived, Finnell said. At the time the
pursuit began, police were trying to
contact him for information.
McDaniel could face numerous
traffic charges, Finnell said. Wagner
said McDaniel should be avoided. He is
armed with a handgun and has threat
ened to shoot if taken into custody. If he
is seen, police should be notified.
