The unforgettable music by Rodgers and Hammerstein is incorpo rated into a play about an Austrian woman, Maria, who is sent to the von Trapp family and leaves her monastic surroundings. Her journey leads her to Captain von Trapp, a widowed naval officer who believes in rearing his seven children with strict military discipline. She is entrusted with caring and helping rear the seven children. Ignoring the Captain’s beliefs on strict, disciplined child rearing, she wins the children’s love with her warm, pas sionate personality. In time, a complicated romance develops between the Captain and Maria. After the two are married, political issues arise with the Nazi’s occupancy of Austria. The Captain is called on to return to military service for the Nazis. Despising the thought of being affil iated with the Nazis, the Captain takes his family and plots to flee the country. Mixed into this romantic, suspense f lied plot are the classic musical pieces. The title song, “The Sound of Music,” is sung at the beginning of the musical, followed later by “Do-Re-Mi,” a musical lesson sung by Maria while teaching the children. Other classic favorites include “My Favorite Things,” sung by Maria to win the approval of the von Trapp children, and “Climb Every Mountain,” which the Reverend Mother sings to Maria to encourage her to follow her heart. Rook said the original music from the musical will be performed with some additional songs that will be new to those who have only seen the movie. Rook said “The Sound of Music” was chosen as the season opener as part of an effort to have familiar titles that include something for every age. Although the story has a dark undertone as a result of the Nazi regime, Rook said this show will try to incorpo Lire B^s 11 Februaryl0th-12th I! |a*wL“” K/& Comer of 11 th & K Lt V 477-3513 I >The Sound i of Music I I 1 WHERE: Star City Dinner Theatre, 803 Q St. ■ DATES: Feb. 10-13,17-20 § and 24-27. Because of this, he said, the show should be enjoyable for both children and adults. “We tried to keep it brisk and find more comedy than people have come to expect out of this production,” he said. To keep the play moving quickly, Rook said a revolving stage that includes three different sets will be used. This will allow for quick scene changes, he said. Jumping from scene to scene quick ly is a concern, along with keeping the 38-member cast organized. This is the first time the Dinner Theatre has done this musical, and the number of performers it requires is large by the theater’s standards, Rook said. But David Claus, who plays von Trapp, said the large cast has not been a problem, and that rehearsals have been going well. He said the actors playing the seven children have been wonderful and described Maria, played by Melissa Bemadt, as a “class act.” Claus said the dinner theater did not have a bad seat, which makes the actors “up close and personal.” He also said they use all the stage and some more, but would not say what he meant by this, adding that the only way to fmd out is to attend. “It’s going to be a great show,” he said.
