    Scientific artwork goes
under the microscope
NEW YORK (AP) - Tiny red
squares of varying shades cover the
paper, creating a mesmerizing mix that
looks as if it came straight out of a mod
em artist’s mind. ,
The colors don’t amount to any
thing distinguishable, but they call for
attention because their vibrancy seems
to beam from the framed artwork hang
ing on a wall.
Another intriguing piece appears to
be a photograph of an ancient wall. The
stone structure is now in pieces, seem
ingly ravaged over time.
Both are part of “Beyond
Appearance: Imagery in Science at the
Millennium,” an unusual exhibit on dis
play at the Paine Webber Art Gallery
through March. It is a show that is
intended to bridge the gap between art
and science.
Both works are not what they seem
to be: the array of red squares is actually
a computer simulated map pf the uni
verse, while the picture of the dilapidat
ed wall is a microscopic photo of ascor
bic acid - better known as vitamin C.
Actually, none of the exhibit’s
pieces is what it seems. That’s because
they are not really art - or, at least their
creators didn’t intend them to be.
They originated as scientific pro
jects.
“This is pure science,” said curator
Lynn Gamwell. “It’s artistically beauti
ful to look at, but they are all science
images.”
Therein lies one of the oddities of
the show. Typically, art is interpreted by
the viewer. But in this case, the pieces
are based purely on fact - meaning there
is no leeway when viewing.
But that’s just one of the differences.
The show draws a more diverse audi
ence. The standard gallery visitors are
attending, as well as science-lovers who
might not normally visit an art show.

here’s your chance to really go somewhere.
Congratulations. All the cramming, Insomnia and junk food
breakfasts have paid off. You’re in college now - and soon, you’ll be
facing questions about your life. Like what to do with the rest of it.
One thing is for sure, if you’re a student of color, with an INROADS
internship you could have a serious job every summer while you’re
still in school - making contacts and gaining experience in your
chosen field of study. Hey, it won’t be easy, but then again if you
wanted it easy, you wouldn’t be reading this right now.
