I Nelson strong in home meet
NELSON from page 16
Hardabura could only cheer his team
on, sitting out the meet with a lower
back injury he suffered earlier this
week.
Hardabura’s prospects for next
week’s dual at Oklahoma are doubt
ful, Allen said. *• -
“When you take a national cham
pion out like that, the losses in scores
add up to about six points,” Allen
said.
Nelson said, “His personality and
showmanship are vital parts of this
team. We miss him. We need him
back.”
The Huskers still managed to
defeat the Falcons handily and better
them in every event despite
Hardabura’s absence. NU gymnasts
took the top three spots in each event.
H We have five scorers that are as
good as any team in the country. We
just can’t have those guys sitting
around in these meets.”
Francis Allen
NU gymnastics coach
Senior Derek Leiter captured the
all-around title with a 55.575, pro
pelled by a first-place finish on the
still rings (9.525). Senior transfer
Asher Lichterman finished second at
53.9 and won the vault with a 9.625,
while tying a career high on the paral
lel bars (9.55, third place).
Sophomore Martin Fournier
came in third all-around at 53.375 and
tied career highs in the pommel horse
(9.3) and parallel bars (9.65). Jeff
Anderson paced USAF’s all-around
lineup, finishing fourth at 51.3.
“We have five scorers that are as
good as any team in the country,”
Allen said. “We just can’t have those
guys sitting around in these meets.”

I Women swimmers upset twice
From Staff Reports
The Nebraska men’s and women’s
swimming and diving teams went in
opposite directions this weekend in
their duals with Kansas and Missouri.
The Cornhusker meii coasted to
victories both nights, pounding KU
141-102 and MU 142-99.
But the women were upset twice -
picking up a 121-120 loss to Kansas
and a 123-120 loss to Missouri. It was
the first time since 1981 that the
Tigers defeated NU.
In both women’s competitions,
the Huskers faltered in final swims.
Against Missouri, NU won the 200
yard freestyle relay but was outscored
15-2 in the event itself. Against KU,
the Huskers won the 400-yard
freestyle relay, but could not over
come a 116-110 deficit.
The men had no such problems as
Michael Windisch won six times in
two nights and was boosted by strong
performances from both Adam Pine
and Anthony Rogis.
The women were led once again
by Shandra Johnson, who won five
events in two nights and participated
in several winning relays.
NU’s men play host to South
Dakota on Saturday at the Bob
Devaney Sports Center. The women
are off until Feb. 17-19, when they
will head to the Big 12
Championships in College Station,
Texas.
Last second plays secure Rams’ win
surm rrom page 10
“We’re the world champions! How
about the Rams!”
Warner, a former Arena League and
NFL Europe quarterback, finished 24
of-45 for 414 yards and two touch
downs.
The Rams dominated for much of
the game but had to settle for three field
goals to take a 9-0 lead before finally
scoring a touchdown.
St. Louis seemed to have put the
game away when Warner threw a 9-yard
pass to Torry Holt with 3:59 left in the
third quarter to take a 16-0 lead.
But suddenly the Titans’ offense
came to life and the St Louis defense
began to wear down behind the batter
ing of George and short passes from
McNair.
Tennessee scored on its next two
possessions, both on 1-yard runs by
George to make it 16-13 with 721 left
It would have been 16-14, but the Titans
chose to go for two points on their first
TD and failed.
A1 Del Greco’s 43-yard field goal
tied it with 2:12 left. Then the Rams’
quick strike for a touchdown set up one
of the most exciting finishes in Super
Bowl history. The Titans, however, just
didn’t have enough at the very end.
“We’ve been doing this off and on
during the year. We knew we had an
opportunity to go on in and score,”
McNair said of the game’s final play on
Dyson’s near-touchdown lunge. “We
said on the sideline when they scored
that the only fault they did was scoring
too quick. We fell just short.”
The Rams’ victory was vindication
for coach Dick Vermeil, who returned to
coaching in 1997 after being gone for
14 years. He had lost his only other
Super Bowl appearance, in 1981 with
Philadelphia.
“You know I’m an emotional guy,
but right now I feel so good and so
proud of this football team and organi
zation,” said Vermiel, known for shed
ding a tear or two at times. ‘To be able to
bring this home to St. Louis, such a
wonderful city. I know they appreciate
us a little more right now”
St Louis took the opening kickoff
and drove from its owp 31 to the Titans
17, twice converting third and long
plays. But holder Mike Horan fumbled
the snap on what would have been a 35
yard field-goal attempt
Warner then hit two quick passes,

32 yards to Torry Holt and 17 to
Marshall Faulk. But that drive stalled at
the 9-yard line and JeffWilkins hit a 27
yard field goal to give St Louis die lead.
The Rams got another chance when
Warner found Faulk all alone for a 52
yard completion to the 17. But Wilkins
missed a 34-yard attempt 12 seconds
into die second quarter.
The Titans kept the Rams out of the
end zone again after St Louis drove 73
yards from its own 16 to the Tennessee
11. This time Isaac Bruce dropped a
pass in the end zone and Wilkins ended
up kicking a 29-yard field goal to make
it 6-0.
The Rams then went 67 yards in 13
plays but ended up again with just a
field goal, a 29-yarder by Wilkins.
The Rams’ next drive, which con
sumed 68 yards on eight plays, was
capped by die game’s first touchdown.
But die Titans came back, driving
66 yards for their first score, a 1-yaid
TD run by George with 14 seconds left
in the third quarter.
The key cm that drive was McNair’s
23-yard scramble to the 2, die first time
he broke loose all day.
But McNair drav wide of an open
Frank Wycheckoo die two-point con
version attempt, so it stayed 16-6.
