Restaurant adds to variety, character ofHaymarket dining experience By JJ. Harder Senior editor Cajun Man finally has a home in Nebraska. Adam Sandler’s Saturday Night Live character would fit right in at Lincoln’s newest restaurant, Kerry O’Ryan’s French Quarter, one of a number of new restaurants in the downtown Haymarket area. O’Ryan’s is located under the O Street viaduct on the southern edge of the Haymarket district, bringing the best of the bayou up north. All the traditional Cajun and Creole cuisine is on the O’Ryan’s menu. Red beans and rice and fried okra, both classic items, are served in healthy portions. The gumbo (a hodge-podge soup with chicken, sausage, rice, vegetables and sea soning) is quite meaty, but not as spicy as I expected for a New Orleans restaurant. O’Ryan’s jam balaya is better than the gumbo, with succulent rice and no over load of flavors. The seafood dishes may be the restaurant’s weak spot. Both of the etoufee dishes, shrimp and craw fish, are without an excessive fishy taste, but they seem to lack the notch that TV chef Emeril Lagasse would probably kick them up to. O’Ryan’s blackened chicken is the specialty. It’s a grilled breast of chicken, covered in crushed pepper and loaded with spice. And not the Tico’s hot-sauce kind of little-kid’s spice, I mean the get-me-another-glass-of water-now kind of spice. It tasted like the dish was heavy on cayenne, warning novices to stay clear. If you have a pacemaker, you probably had better order a burger. But when it gets too spicy, O’Ryan’s cornbread is there to help you out. John Coffey wouldn’t be asking for some in the “Green Mile,” but it’s worthy of ordering an extra piece. The menu also offers a Cajun sampler - if you can’t decide what to order, it has a little bit of every thing. Two vegetarian items also grace the menu pages. And you can always order buffalo wings if you Kerry O'Ryan's French Quarter WHERE: 700 O St. TYPE: Cajun and Creole cuisine COST: $6 - $8 entrees FIVE WORDS: Finally, Bayou spice in Lincoln. don’t want to venture into the Bayou fare. Kerry O’Ryan’s is worth visit ing, but it’s not a place you’ll be eating at every week. The food is definitely different when com pared to most of the mediocrity that plagues downtown. . v «. .■ >■ *v: • 1^7.50 ; .
