Professor to talk about trip From staff reports Agronomy Professor Jerry Maranville will talk about his “Experiences in West Africa” on Thursday morning at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in the Nebraska East* Union. The program, International Eye Opener, sponsored by the International Programs Division of the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources at UNL, will begin at 7:15 a.m, and is open to all faculty, staff and students, as well as the public. Maranville will talk about INTSORMIL, the International Sorghum and Pearl Millet Program, and its 15-year collaborative program with UNL. The collaboration aids in establish ing agricultural research programs to help subsistence farmers produce more food in West African countries. Maranville will discuss his recent trip to West Africa to review the partner ship of INTSORMIL and World Vision International, a direct technology trans fer assistant, in Ghana, Mali and Niger. I Two child abuse cases reported Two child abuse cases reported Two unrelated incidents of child abuse were reported to the Lincoln Police Department within days of each other, said Lincoln Police Capt. David Beggs. One report was taken after a 2 month-old child was taken to BryanLGH West Medical Center with a spiral fracture to the femur and injuries to the ribs and collarbone. The second report was received Monday at 7 p.m. after a 5-month-old child, who reportedly had a skull fracture, was taken to the doctor. Police did not comment on either child’s name or any suspects associat ed with possible abuse. No arrests have been made in connection to either report. Man arrested for motor vehicle homicide A man was arrested for misde meanor motor vehicle homicide Monday after a fatal accident on Interstate 80. Sheriff Terry Wagner said Armando Palma-Martinez, 26, fled the scene of the accident. Palma-Martinez was scheduled to appear in Lancaster County Court today. Because the driver was not a citi zen and was transporting undocu mented Mexican immigrants, it is possible that federal charges could be filed, but Wagner had not heard of any charges as of Tuesday evening, he said. The accident that occurred at 4:47 a.m. involved a 1991 Plymouth mini van carrying 12 undocumented Mexican immigrants, including the driver. The van lost control and rolled several times before coming to a stop on its top. Heymarket Of the 11 passengers, two remain in the hospital and one, identified as Maria Ortez Gallejas, 26, died Monday from her injuries. One of the two still in the hospital include a man listed as a John Doe at the sheriff’s office. He remains at BryanLGH West Medical Center. The other passenger remains at BryanLGH East. The Immigration and Naturalization Service detained all passengers and the driver. It might be possible that the driver lost control because the vehicle was overloaded, but the investigation con tinues, Wagner said. The van was reportedly en route from Phoenix to Minneapolis. UNL student arrested for DWI after driving wrong way A University of Nebraska Lincoln freshman was arrested Friday morning for driving while intoxicated. An officer noticed a vehicle at 16th and R streets in the eastbound lane turning the wrong way onto 16th Street, said Sgt. Mylo Bushing. The officer stopped the driver between R and S streets on 16th Street at about 4:17 a.m. Police said after Benjamin Walstrom, of Omaha, failed two sobriety tests and refused to take a preliminary breath test, he was taken to Detox. His breath test at Detox was .203. Legal limit is. 10 blood alcohol level. Walstrom was admitted into Detox and sited for DWI. He is to appear in court Feb.7, Bushing said.
