Brink, Lamb place in Ames meet By Jason Merrihew Staff writer The seventh-ranked Nebraska women’s gymnastics team took care of the 10th-ranked Iowa State Cyclones in Ames. The Nebraska women’s gymnas tic team posted the highest team scoie ever for a second meet in the season in school history. The Huskers outscored the Cyclones 195.65 194.475. “We wound up with a score that would tie us for third in the country,” Coach Dan Kendig said. “The good news is, we know we are better.” NU quickly gained momentum with strong performances on the bars. “We started out on bars, and the bars really set the tone for the rest of the meet,” Kendig said. Nebraska was led by senior all American gymnast Heather Brink. Brink won the all-around with a score ((We wound up with a score that would tie us for third in the country. The good news is, we know we are better.” Dan Kendig " NU gymnastics coach of 39.375. “I am excited that I got first, but I went out there and did my routine for the team and not to win individually,” Brink said. Junior Amy Ringo put in a very impressive second-place showing in the all-around with a score of 39.125. This meet marked the first time in college Ringo has competed in the all-around. With the help of assistant coach Dennis Harrison, Ringo is now competing on the bars. “I feel like a complete gymnast now,” Ringo said. Freshman A.J. Lamb turned in another stellar performance in her young collegiate career. Lamb placed third in the all-around with a score of 39.075. Senior Nicole Wilkinson tied with Iowa State’s Kelli More on the balance beam with a score of 9.875. Freshman Jess Wertz tied Ringo for third place on the floor exercise with a score of9.825. Nebraska will see action again this Friday, when it travels to Bermuda for the Bermuda Triangle Challenge. Axtell finds range off bench for Kansas By Samuel McKewon Senior editor LAWRENCE, Kan. - Dressed in cowboy boots and a coat straight out of a Marlboro commercial, guard Luke Axtell sticks out like a sore thumb in the Kansas locker room. For some parts of the season, Axtell, a transfer from Texas, has stuck out sorely on the court, too. He’s had problems finding the right shot in his nearly unlimited range. His rebounding is subpar. And, after smaller NU guards blew by his 6-foot-8 frame in a 97-82 Jayhawk win Saturday time and time again, it looked as if his defense ranked a little below his rebounding. “Things have been a little off,” Axtell said. Yet Saturday could have been a breakout performance for the junior. He scored 15 points and led the Jayhawks in scoring for the first time this season. His 3-pointer to end a decisive 17-2 first-half run brought the loudest roars from the capacity crowd in Allen Fieldhouse, as they showered Axtell with chants of “Luuuuuuke” as he left the court. “I’m out of the slump,” Axtell said. “Officially?” asked a reporter. “Yes sir, officially,” Axtell replied. “But I might be back in it the next game.” That’s the way it’s been for the bushy-haired gunner who has seen his time on court drop dramatically from his time at UT - a school he left because of disagreements with then CoachTom Penders. In KU’s 12 man-deep roster, Axtell backs up Kenny Gregory at the shooting guard spot, though Gregory isn’t much of a shooter. Axtell got only 13 minutes on the court Saturday, missing his first few shots, but hitting timely 3s. One of only three KU players who are legiti mate 3-point threats (guards Jeff Boschee and Kirk Hinrich are the others), Axtell spent most of his time outside the arc. Before the game, Axtell was cold. He was sent home the day before because of flu-like symptoms, Coach Roy Williams said. But he hit 5 of 11 shots from the field and was more effective as the game went on. “It hasn’t been easy for Luke,” Williams said. “But he’s adjusting well enough. We’d like him to play a little more defense.” I i W I w ■ 1 I #y. I ^ WAm 1 ^ I ^ pil J ^ |yj Rest Assured. Be Insured.
