Glowing guns aid research
PITTSBURGH (AP) - Not many
companies encourage their employ
ees to shoot each other with squirt
guns at work. Then again, not many
companies have squirt guns with
glow-in-the-dark ammo.
Prolume does. And its new line of
squirt guns is designed to raise money
for deadly serious research.
The partnership of doctors and
scientists is duplicating luminescent
genes from jellyfish and other sea
creatures and using them, for now, to
fill up squirt guns. Next up could be
glow-in-the-dark soda and beer.
The idea is to raise enough money
from selling novelty items to under
write more important pursuits, such
as using the glowing genes to identify
cancerous tumors or detect nerve gas.

Kerrey considers leaving Senate
ByJillZeman
Staff uriter
Sen. Bob Kerrey is considering
trading in his work in the U.S. Senate
for a taste of university life.
If offered the position, Kerrey may
leave the Senate to become president of
New School University in New York
City.
Kerrey is taking his time to decide
whether to run for re-election to a third
Senate term, said Jody Ryan, press sec
retary for Kerrey.
“It’s a very personal decision, and
he is spending time with family and
friends to help make his choice,” Ryan
said.
Kerrey’s hesitancy to run for re
election is not because he was unhappy
with his job, Ryan said.
Kerrey wanted Nebraskans to know
he has had a great time representing
Nebraska, and he has learned a lot.
Kerrey said he was happy with what
he and the state of Nebraska achieved
together in his past two terms, Ryan
said.
He must make a decision by Feb.
15, the deadline for incumbents to file
for re-election. Challengers have until
March 1 to file.
Kerrey is the only Democratic
office-holder in the state, so if he does
n’t run for re-election, the state
Democratic Party would be devastated,
j
said John Hibbing, University of
Nebraska-Lincoln political science pro
fessor.
Hibbing said Kerrey has a good
standing with the people, and citizens
seem to be pleased with him.
He has been an unusual politician,
and his voting record was not standard,
Hibbing said.
Kerrey is also more liberal than
what some Nebraskans would like but
still remains very popular, Hibbing
said.
“There are lots of things that set
(Kerrey) apart from other politicians -
he has a certain star appeal,” Hibbing
said. “But who knows, maybe someone
else could do that.”
Debate to focus on fetal research

as whether fetal tissue should be
used.
Schmit-Albin said she is still
looking for answers to 17 questions
presented to the regents at last
month’s meeting.
Some of the questions included
the exact procedure used, whether
compensation was given to Carhart
and what UNMC’s policy was on

Miller said he would use the
debate to bring out a number of
points.
One of those points is that the

nation that looks to an alternative
source of supply for tissue.
Miller said ending the research
and forcing research outside of
Nebraska would end using tissue
from alternative sources.
“In sum, if you are pro-life, you
should support the Med Center alter
native supply source program and
encourage your state senators to
keep the research here,” Miller said
in his letter.
Asked if the debate would end
the controversy, Schmit-Albin said
she wasn’t sure what the debate
would accomplish.
“I don’t have any idea what this
will foster,” she said. “If it will result
in the 17 questions being answered,
that would be wonderful.”
