UNL award recognizes gay, lesbian community GLBT from page 1 “There’s a presumption that only hetero sexuality is normal and acceptable,” Tetreault said. “And there’s privileges that go along with that.” Examples of this include the ability for gays and lesbians to talk freely about their partner and be accepted, receive insurance benefits from their partner and marry legal ly, Tetreault said. Members of the GLBT community also face dangers when they go out if their sexu al orientation is recognized, Tetreault said. “Many GLBT people do not feel safe - going out because of verbal threats and vio lence,” Tetreault said. “There’s even vio lence towards people who are perceived as being GLBT.” Because of those issues, Grosskopf said, it’s important to recognize people who have made an effort to help and accept GLBT people. “There are people who have gone to great strides to recognize GLBT people on campus,” Grosskopf said. “And we want to recognize people who have empowered and included GLBT people.” NASA ponders future plans NASA from page 1 _ “In terms of research, it’s the type of thing that draws on for years,” Lovato said. The Mars Polar Lander was part of the Mars Surveyor Program, which started in 1994. This program is a smaller and less expensive program compared to other NASA Mars programs in pre vious years and has a goal of sending out two mis sions every 26 months. Part of the Failure Investigation Board will examine the time schedule set by the program and see if it is too strenuous. “We have to find out if we were too aggressive in trying to do what we did,” Isbell said. In recent years, NASA has been trying to cut back on expenses, which usually creates increased problems with the programs, Schmidt said. However, Isbell said NASA’s budget has remained constant in recent years, but inflation has increased its expenses. The craft’s disappearance marks the second failed attempt in the last three months to land on Mars. The Mars Climate Qrbiter was lost in September as it approached the planet. A report said the previous craft burned up in the planet’s atmosphere because it approached the planet too quickly. The error was due to a calculations mis take. . Schmidt said he hoped the craft’s disappear ance wouldn’t hinder future funding for projects of this nature. Isbell said he was optimistic. “Part of the beauty of this program is to lift our heads up,” he said. “We’ve got more chances in the future, we hope.” .com fX chip off the old^]^ B16c Close your ears andkapen your •yes, John Q.
