For Brown, tackling is instinct
BROWN from page 12
He gives a sheepish grin.
“It’s just reaction.”
He pops his left fist into his open
right hand. Reaction,
Brown continues.
“You see something out there,
and you react to it. I’ll see something,
and I’ll go to it, get there. Reaction.
It’s hard to explain.
“When I’m coming up for run
support, the play will develop for me.
“I’ll see a lineman block down.
Or a running back coming out. And I
just react to it. And I’m there. It’s
something I’m just able to do.”
Hard to explain.
Play does not slow down for
Brown. It is not like the zone. Speeds
are normal. But he sees the angles of
pursuit clearly. He rarely misses. He
admits to missing a “couple” of tack
les against Colorado in the fourth
quarter. Maybe a couple against
Texas earlier this season.
But not many.
“Things are moving like they’re
supposed to be moving,” Brown says.
“I’m just able to get.. .1 don’t have no
idea how it happens. It’s hard to
explain. I’m just able to get a good
angle. I put myself in good position
to get a good angle as far as where I
line up before the play begins. Then
it’s just reaction.”
Reaction. Hard to explain.
Some of his tackles are free form,
with Brown standing on his own two
feet at the end of the play and ball
carrier on the ground. A few can
knock his angles off course - the bet
ter ones.
But consider the best he’s ever
faced - Heisman Trophy winner
Ricky Williams of Texas. Brown, in a
performance that is remembered as a
silver lining amidst dark clouds, had
19 tackles and shadowed No. 34 all
day long.
“Mike is the kind of guy that
when he makes a decision on a play,
he goes with it,” McBride said. “And
when he makes a decision, he is
right.”
“It’s instinct for him. He’s born
withit.”
Reaction. Hard to explain.
What Brown’s stats don’t show is
how many tackles he forced for his
teammates - the number of times he’s
strung a play out to the sidelines or
turned the play back toward his line
backers and defensive linemen.
So Brown will occasionally take
a block on if he doesn’t have the
angle.
“The hardest tackle to make is
one where the back is coming
straight at you,” Brown says. “So you
force yourself upfield so a guy will
block you, so the running back will
cutback into your help.”
And Brown must know where his
help is - the instinct of knowing not
only where he will be but everybody
else on the field. Brown credits his
coaching staff for that knowledge.
McBride throws the compliment
back at Brown.
“He’s as football intelligent as
anybody I’ve seen,” McBride says.
“He understands our defense as well
as the coaches do.”
it
“He s as football
intelligent as
anybody I’ve seen ”
Charlie McBride
NU defensive coordinator
McBride says Brown had some
good teachers. Secondary Coach
George Darlington and former rover
Mike Minter, now a starter with the
Carolina Panthers in the NFL, are
among them. But Brown is second on
the all-time tackles chart, far ahead
of Minter.
Simply, his tackling abilities con
found those who attempt to bottle it
with explanation.
Including Brown himself.
“You feel,‘this play coming,’
Brown says. “’Third and 5, maybe
they’ll slip in a draw in here.’You can
just tell. Look at the running back.
Just the way he acts. The quarter
backs, the receivers. Their body
movements will tell you. At least,
they tell me.
“Most of my life I played offense.
Defense, here and there. I really did
n’t tackle that well. And then it was
like all of the sudden ...”
Reaction. Hard to explain.
“I don’t know, man,” Brown says,
walking away to do an ESPN inter
view.
“I have no idea. It’s a freak thing.”
