Grade: A Gamers from the old days were watering at the mouth when Squaresoft announced it would release the Final Fantasy Anthology in America. Way back when the Super Nintendo was the dominant system, Final Fantasy m was the greatest role-playing game ever. In the hearts of many of us, it has never seen an equal. But Final Fantasy III to us in the United States was actually the sixth in the series. The United States had Final Fantasy under the right name, but the next ver sion we received was Final Fantasy IV, which was renamed Final Fantasy II for us. When we received Final Fantasy VI, it became Final Fantasy III. Final Fantasy VII, the first one for PlayStation, was correctly numbered - the Japanese must have figured, “Ah, the hell with it” Now, under the correct names, Square has re-released the Super Nintendo games Final Fantasy V and VI as Final Fantasy Anthology. The Japanese version of Anthology actually included Final Fantasy IV but it 1758 N. 27th, new duplex built in 1999. 4BR, 2 bath, double garage, $1,050/rnonth. 450-5674. 2639 N. 5th, clean, 3BR, 2 bath, 2 garage, C/A, appli ances, washer/dryer, no pets, $750. 435-7807. Quiet con crete construction! Laundry. was sooooo buggy (it crashed all the time) that Square decided to avoid get ting similar complaints with the U.S. release. The U.S. version includes a musical CD instead. This is also perhaps the only com plaint with die anthology - it does crash from time to time. It’s more common with V than it is with VI, but it does hap pen to both. Some people may bemoan that the graphics are the same from the old 16 bit days, but for the gamer at heart, it only appeals to a sense of nostalgia. The hours of time I lost in front of my Super Nintendo were rewarded with the best strayline ever in a video game, lull of epic conflicts, battles and betray als - one of those few video games that can be described as “art” If you think graphics from the old days will hold you back, the story will make up for it a thousand-fold. To all those people who have found themselves in the grip of the storyline for Final Fantasy VII but never played VI - you ain’t seen nothing yet For an added bonus, CGI movies have been thrown in to spice up every thing. Anyone who has played a Squaresoft game knows how fantastic these. So you know you want to play VI again, or fra- the first time. But Final Fantasy V never saw mainstream release in die United States, and to all die gamers who are wonder ing if it’s worth it, the answer is yes. The “jobs” system of character development was snatched up and adapted to form Final Fantasy Tactics, but it first saw the light of day in V A solid storyline backs up this system (although it still doesn’t beat VI) as do reasonably interesting characters. - Anyone who has played an RPG * should own “Final Fantasy Anthology,” because it’s as good as it gets.
