Scheduling looks to be about the only thing Snyder bor rowed from K-State history. During the wild days of Prohibi tion in what locals affectionately call “The Little Apple,” KSU teams were not bad. In fact, despite the look of utterly profound defeat on the face of Coach Charles Bachman (pictured somewhere), he actually finished his eight-year stint at K-State with a win ning record. Maybe he knew what was coming next What came next, after 10 years of mediocrity, was a half-century period of nearly unprecedented futility. Chew on these statsiFrom 1937 to 1990, Kansas State had four winning sea sons. During that period, despite play ing the likes of South Dakota State, Tampa and Wichita State (which, by the way, beat KSU in 1985), its record was 132 wins and 402 losses. Amazingly, the true depth of futili ty during this period isn’t even proper ly represented by the numbers. To truly understand, let’s sift through the col lection of miscreants and plain weirdos who patrolled the sidelines as KSU’s head coach at one time or another. Start with Lud. With a name like Lud, he had two strikes against him at precisely the time He was released from the womb. In addition, he looked like Mr. Rogers, and coached like him, too. Hobbs Adams replaced Fiser. Strangely, enough, he preceded him, too. So, the powers that be must’ve smartened up and rehired a former coach who had been successful in his first go-round, right? Of course not. Hobbs’ teams were 4-12-2 before he skipped Manhattan. Then, surely he must’ve done better in his second stint Wrong again. In fact, Hobbs coached his 1946 team to an 0-9 record. The team scored a grand total of 41 points in its nine games. After Ralph Graham (4-26), along came Bill Meek, a man with a perfect last name for the Wildcats. Meek actu ally seemed to be turning his Mildcats’ fortunes around. After a 7-3 season in 1954, he was gone. Maybe he found a better job at say, the gas company. It’s also quite possible that athletic department officials canned Meek solely due to their fascination at the prospect of having a coach named T’s Stop and Shop N*] i®6 TO *3 j car wash * with coupon I Discount , ,n ,, $.59 ^Cigarettes 27th 31ld Dudley Bags of Icej Bus. Bus Mertes lasted five years * before being replaced by Doug Weaver (8-60), who, possibly by the grace of Lud Fiser, managed to stick around for seven seasons, three of which were devoid of a win. s After Vince Gibson (33-52) pilot ed the team through the turbulent late 1960s and early ’70s, when Manhattan was a hotbed of anti-war, anti-estab lishment activity, the Ellis Rainsbeiger era commenced. Rainsbeiger obviously hung around long enough to catch disco fever inside Manhattan’s only night club, the Frisky Kitty. The coach is pic tured in Kansas Stated media guide dressed in full Saturday Night Fever regalia. His fashion genius didn’t translate into wins - he finished 6-27. Onto the ’80s and Jim Dickey, who did lead KSU to a winning 6-5 record in 1982. It was all over for the coach in 1985, though, after the aforementioned loss to Wichita State, followed by a defeat at the hands of Northern Iowa. Interim Coach Lee Moon prompt ly took over the reins and led the team to losses vs. Texas Christian and North Texas State. After Stan Parrish (3-30), Kansas State finally, finally found a coach to lead them out of the fiery pits of the Big Eight cellar and into the promised land. After 17 coaching changes in the previous six decades, Snyder accepted the job. The rest, as they say, is history. And what a history it is. The next time Wildcat fans want to get smarmy about their recent success, they would be wise to listen to Devaney. Shut up, Lud.
