Applewhite had only 47 yards passing at halftime but, completed 8 of 9 passes in the second half. The nine passes were 12 fewer than the number he threw in the first half. Applewhite’s day gave him 4,617 total yards for his career, moving him past former Heisman Trophy winner Earl Campbell for fifth place. Though it largely got lost in the shuffle, Eric Crouch passed for a career-high 204 yards in Saturday’s loss, the most yards passed for by an NU player since Bobby Newcombe against Texas A&M last season. Crouch had 31 rushing yards for 235 total yards. . ■ Saturday, ESPN showed a feature on Crouch, who explained how much easier it was to manage the 25-second clock this season than it was last year. In the game, NU burned three timeouts because of plays sent in late by the coaching staff. Nebraska’s next opponent, Kansas, scored a mildly sur prising upset over arch rival Missouri with a 21-0 victory Saturday, as Jayhawk fans stormed the field and tore down the goalposts. The game, which will be held Saturday at 6 p.m. and televised by Fox Sports Net, marks the fourth consecutive time that NU has played KU at night in the series. The last time the Huskers played there was the weekend of the October ice storm two years ago. ■ A trick play afforded Bobby Newcombe the oppor tunity to throw his first pass since the California game Sept. 11. Newcombe’s protec tion broke down on the reverse pass, but he was still able to complete it to Matt Davison for a 33-yard gain.
