Pi ■ Annette Murrell honors two of the greatest female jazz singers, Billie Holiday and Bessie Smith. By Danell McCoy Staff writer For the second year, Lincoln’s “Queen of Blues” will be performing tonight at The Q, 226 S. Ninth St. .. "vt- V •' Annette Murrell will be performing the music of two great jazz performers, Billie Holiday and Bessie Smith, with such songs as “Do Your Duty” and “Do Notiling Till You Hear From Me.” Both Holiday and Smith, who are considered icons in the jazz world, were bisexual women who sang about love, heartache and life. Both of the women had relation ships with men and women, which is shown in some of the songs they per formed, although not blatantly. Murrell’s performance, which not only celebrates the music of the two women but also their sexuality, com plements the Nebraska Gay/Lesbian Film Festival. Murrell said although the film festi val happens only during Gay History Month, education of gay, lesbian and bisexual rights should continue throughout the year. “This country’s policy on GLBT is one of discrimination and bigotry and oppression,” she said. “As a communi ty, we need to learn that gays are human beings who deserve equal rights and should be able to walk down the street without being molested or killed even. They deserve access to health care and other benefits.” Murrell said she believes the festi val, as well as the many events through out the month, brings attention to the civil rights of gays in the community. “This is something that has always been fought for,” she said. “This is something we still fight for.” The concert begins at 9 p.m. and will continue until 11 p.m. There is no cover charge with a film festival pass.
