Both the Nebraska Men’s and

women s L-ross
Country Teams
will travel to Penn
State this week
end to compete in
the National
Advance.
Seven mem
bers from each
team will run in
die race.
“This meet
win get tne team ready tor tne upcom
ing conference meet,” NU Coach Jay
Dirksensaid.
Although Dirksen does not know
what teams will be showing up, he is
certain the talent level will be high.
“Most of the schools competing are
from the East Coast and New England
and have very talented runners,”
Dirksen said. “This is why we are going
to attend this meet. There also will be a
few teams from the Midwest and
Pacific Coast competing as well.”
The women’s team is currently
ranked 17* in the nation and is led by
senior captain Jaime Pauli.
“I agree with Coach Dirksen that
this meet will be a good tune-up for the
upcoming conference meet,” Pauli said.
“I would like, however, for our runners
to run closer in time. When this is
accomplished our team will be more
successful.”
The women will possibly be run
ning the 5000-meter race without stand
out runner Michelle Brooks, who is
questionable, Pauli said.
The men’s team will be led, in part,
by junior captain Aaron Carrizales, who
is hoping for the team to step its perfor
mance up a notch.
“We need to improve from our last
meet,” Carrizales said.
The men’s team will also count on
its top runner, Marcus Witter.
“It will be good to have our best run
ner run up front,” Carrizales said. “With
Marcus running up front, it will help our
team’s performance.”

Seminole Heisman hopeful arrested
2FSU receivers, including Peter Warrick, charged with grand theft
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) -
Heisman Trophy hopeful Peter
Warrick was indefinitely suspended
following his arrest Thursday on
charges he and a Florida State team
mate were allowed to underpay for
clothes at a department store by
about $391.
Warrick and Laveranues Coles,
both Seminole receivers, were
charged with grand theft along with
a Dillard’s clerk, 19-year-old Rachel
Myrtil. She was accused of letting
the two players buy $412.38 worth
of clothing for $21.40 on Sept. 29.
An off-duty officer saw what
happened through a surveillance
camera, police said.
Earlier this week, the players
said they were cooperating with
investigators. Warrick, 22, sounded
confident he and the 21-year-old
Coles would be cleared.
“It’s not like I killed the presi
dent,” Warrick said Tuesday.
Florida State Coach Bobby
Bowden said in a written statement
that he was “terribly disappointed”
and noted Warrick is on schedule to
graduate.
“He came back for his senior
season instead of going pro, and he
has been such a hard worker and
good leader,” Bowden said. “It
makes this all the more disappoint
ing.”
Florida State Athletics Director
Dave Hart said Coles was kicked off
the team because he already was on
probation with past problems - legal
and academic.

tice with the team but cannot play, at

least until his case is resolved under
school policy. He will miss top
ranked Florida State’s game against
Miami on Saturday and possibly the
rest of the season.
“Peter Warrick has been a good
citizen here prior to this,” Hart said.
“The door certainly is open for Peter
to return.”
Investigators met with the play
ers at Coles’ apartment and they
players turned over the clothing,
police said. Coles had bought a hat,
three shirts and a pair of jeans;
details of Warrick’s purchase were
not immediately disclosed.
Coles and Warrick surrendered
at the Leon County Jail and were
freed without bond, Assistant State
Attorney Warren Goodwin said.
Arrangements were being made for
Myrtil to surrender.
Each could face up to five years
in prison if convicted, but they
would probably get probation,
Goodwin said. A first court appear
ance for the sole purpose of deter
mining if they have legal representa
tion was set for Monday.
Warrick, an All-American from
Bradenton, has 36 catches for 508
yards and four touchdowns as a
senior for the top-ranked
Seminoles.
Hart said he and Coach Bobby
Bowden each spoke privately with
Warrick.
“He is very remorseful,” Hart
said. “He expressed at great length
his personal disappointment with
affecting so many people with his
poor decision.”
It’s not the first time Warrick
and Coles have been in trouble with
the law.
Warrick was charged in 1998
with disorderly conduct and resist
ing arrest, both misdemeanors, for a
confrontation in the parking lot of a
Tampa fast-food restaurant. The
charges were eventually dropped.
Coles was charged last year with
hitting his stepmother outside her
home. He was suspended for last
year’s opener against Texas A&M
and later served 150 hours of com
munity service for the misdemeanor
battery charge. He also was sus
pended for this year’s opener for
academic reasons.
Concussion syndrome knocks out Cyclone
■ Following multiple
concussions, lineman Josh
Rank is forced to sit out.
AMES, Iowa (AP) - Josh Rank’s
football season at Iowa State is over.
Rank, a backup offensive lineman,
has been diagnosed with post-concus
sion syndrome and will be held out the
rest of the season. The junior from
Cedar Rapids will be examined again in
the spring to see if he can play next year.
Rank has been suffering from
i
migraine headaches since August. He
had two concussions last year and may
have suffered another during preseason
workouts.
After being examined by two neu
rologists, Rank went to Chicago on
Monday to see Dr. James Kelly, an
expert on post-concussion syndrome.
Kelly confirmed the headaches are
being caused by concussions.
“He said there’s nothing extremely
alarming,” Rank said. “He said to get
re-evaluated in the spring and think
about what you want to do.”
■' I
Rank was Iowa State’s No. 1 center
in spring practice this year and would
have seen extensive playing time at
center and guard this season, Coach
Dan McCamey said. He had played
sparingly in the first two games but has
not played since.
Rank said he plans to be with the
team as much as possible but is not
allowed to run or lift weights until Kelly
examines him again this spring.
“My thinking is to get back as soon
as possible,” Rank said. “I need to take
this seriously and get healthy.”
