ing I had been seated in the “Maple
Creek.” This is the only car where a
group of actors, put together by Holly
Nielson, performs a murder mystery.
The guests interact with the actors and
take notes to decide “whodunit.”
Nielson said every show is differ
ent, and that it’s “in-your-face drama.”
One couple, Myla and Tim Jones,
were chosen to be actors from the audi
ence. When asked what the best part of
the evening was so far, Myla Jones
replied, “I like the history and meeting
people. It’s a great atmosphere.”
They obviously had a different
experience than I did. Although it was
interesting to ride on an old train and
feel glamorous for 10 minutes, I felt as
if I was sold short.
Because I rode on the dinner car
and not the murder mystery car, my
evening consisted of a five-course din
ner, a quick tour of the other cars
(which made me feel a pang of jeal
ousy) and clips of old ’40s movies
toward the end of the trip.
The meal might have been enough
to keep us occupied, except for two
things. One, you could get the same
entree on a United Airlines flight and
two, the trip was 3lA hours long.
Perhaps it’s because I’m a college
kid, and $50 is a lot of money to me. Or
maybe it’s that I don’t get that sentimen
tal feeling like the people who lived
through the period did. It did seem as if
the other people on my car, who were
all older, enjoyed themselves. I did
catch a few people sneaking peeks at
their watches, though.
I think the important part is to catch
a show there. In the future, the dinner
train will be presenting Oktoberfest, a
Halloween show, and USO shows. The
train is also available for charter, and
Eveland said he was “open to many
concepts and ideas” people have for
parties.

dinner train patron
It’s not that a good time can’t be had
on the train, but bringing a good con
versationalist is a must and first dates
are not advised. The drive there is pleas
ant, and it was nice to get out of town
and see something different.
However, if the train were more
authentic, the wait staff were in cos
tume, the food were high quality and if
each car had entertainment, a better
time would be had for the price.
I think of it this way : As of right
now, the dinner train is like commu
nism - it’s better in theory than in prac
tice.
