    Husker runners
to tackle Griak
■ The annual Minnesota
race is among the best in
the country, and Dirksen
expects his teams to battle.
By Jason Merrihew
StaffWriter
Coming off an impressive home
showing at the Woody Greeno Invite,
the Nebraska men’s and women’s
cross country teams will head to
Minneapolis to compete in the Roy
Griak Invitational.
One of the largest races in the
country, the invitational will contain
210 teams with over 2,000 runners.
Nebraska Head Coach Jay
Dirksen said both teams will show an
improvement from last week.
“I think we will run better than
last week in both men’s and women’s,
but the competition is much, much
tougher than last week.
“We will see a lot of the top teams
in the country,” Dirksen said. “We
may run a lot better and place not as
well.”
Showing improvement is more
important for the Comhuskers than
placing high, Dirksen said.
“The large competitive field will
get both teams ready for the hard con
ference schedule.
“We have a really difficult sched
ule on purpose because we feel we
can get better from running against
good teams rather than going to the
meets just because we can win,” he
said.
The men’s team is heading to
Minneapolis after sharing first place
at the Woody Greeno Invitational last
week.
The Cornhuskers’ showing was
impressive considering four out of
the nine runners are true freshmen.
The freshmen include Mike
Kamm placing 24th last week, Jed
Barta taking 36th, James DeBruhl
finishing 39th and Hunter Kosman
placing 72nd.
“As the race went on, they got
stronger,” Dirksen said.
Junior Marcus Witter was the
Huskers’ top finisher last week with a
fifth-place showing.
The Huskers may lose the ser
vices of Barta this weekend.
Barta’s status is questionable
because he is recovering from bron
chitis.
For the women, Michelle Brooks
led the way last week with a fifth
place showing.
Jamie Pauli and Jeannette
Zimmer also had strong showings
last week, placing seventh and 13th
respectively.
Dirksen also has been impressed
by freshman Kathryn Handrup, who
placed 15th last week and Jenna
Lucas, who Dirksen believes ran bet
ter last week than she had all of last
year.
Amie Finker, Deb Osteen,
Christy Linnell, Steph Stewart and
Melissa Drozda will make up the rest
of the women’s roster for the invita
tional.
The Roy Griak Invitational will
be held at the Les Bolstad Golf
Course on Saturday. The women will
start at 11 a.m., and the men will fol
low at noon.

said. “You know, we had to leave
our helmets on because we were
getting things thrown at us. I’m
sure it will be the same this time
- it’ll be a hostile environment.
But that’s what college football is
all about. It will be a good atmos
phere for a good football game.”
And a good football game is
exactly what Davison, Solich,
and the rest of the Huskers
expect.
Said Solich: “Missouri pre
sents a great challenge... I think
they are comfortable heading
into the Big 12 race, and I think
they will be a very big part of the
Big 12 race. We are looking for
ward to the challenge.”

Vanden Bosch stands out for NU
BOSCH from page 12
They both have the same attitude.
They don’t play real happy. He plays
consistently with a bad attitude. It’s the
attitude you have to have to play this
game.”
Opposing players know all about
that mean attitude and what he can do
to them. Even Vanden Bosch’s
Nebraska teammates have their eyes
on him in practice.
“It’s definitely good to have a guy
like that on your team playing as a
teammate with you,” said sophomore
quarterback Eric Crouch. “Every time
in practice I always look for Kyle and
what side he is lined up on just to make
sure you watch yourself because he is
such an aggressive player.”
Speed and power are what make
him dominant, Epley said. Vanden
Bosch’s 1.58 seconds in the 10-yard
dash are almost as fast as all of NU’s I
backs.
So it isn’t surprising that Vanden
Bosch’s first tactic is to try and beat
the bigger, slower offensive linemen
around the corner. Once Vanden
Bosch beats the blocker, all eyes cen
ter on him and what he is going to do
to the helpless quarterback.
On Saturday, he ran Southern
Mississippi quarterback Jeff Kelly
down from behind, drove him to the
turf and knocked the football loose. It
was a play the standout Husker licks
his chops on.
“When you are the backside rush,
and the quarterback has his back to
you,” Vanden Bosch said. “That is the
hit you dream of.”
