Senior linebacker Julius
Jackson stole the show by scoring
twice. The first score came when
Kyle Vanden Bosch sacked
Southern Miss quarterback Jeff
Kelly and knocked the ball loose.
Jackson picked up the fumble on
the 16 yard line and crossed the
plain before being tackled in the
end zone. The second came when
Keyuo Craver tipped a Kelly
pass. Jackson intercepted it and
returned it 28 yards for the score.
The Nebraska secondary rose
to the challenge presented by
Kelly and a pesky group of
receivers. Southern Miss passed
45 times for 268 yards, but the
secondary came up with four
interceptions by three different
defenders. Craver, Jackson and
Clint Finley all had interceptions.

Senior rover Mike Brown led
the defense with a quiet but effec
tive 12 tackles. Brown also had
one pass breakup to go along
with four for Craver and two for
Ralph Brown.
Freshman linebacker Randy
Stella gave glimpses of what is to
come after a 94-yard kickoff
return for a touchdown after the
Golden Eagles’ first score. The
touchdown was called back on a
holding penalty, but Stella was
still credited with a 50-yard
return.

Senior punter Dan
Hadenfeldt continued his solid
play with a 49.8 yard average on
Saturday. He is first in the Big 12
and second in the nation with a
47.7 punting average. Hadenfeldt
had a long punt of 59 yards and
pinned Southern Miss once
inside their own 20 yard line
when tight end Aaron Golliday
saved the ball from the end zone
and a touchback.

Eric Johnson suffered a medi
al collateral ligament sprain in
the first quarter. He will be out
four to six weeks, and Julius
Jackson is expected to start in his
place while he is injured.

After Saturday’s game, NU
had the top two rated passers in
the Big 12 Conference. Newly
converted wingback Bobby
Newcombe is No. 1 with a 191.1
rating while Eric Crouch is sec
ond with a 177.2 rating.
Newcombe and Crouch both
have attempted 17 passes with
Crouch completing 11 to
Newcombe’s 10.

Southern Miss is now 0-3
against the Big 12 under Head
Coach Jeff Bower. The chance to
go for another win won’t be too
long for Bower as Texas A&M is
up next for the Golden Eagles on
Saturday.
