Dance troupe to perform at UNO With her free-flowing hair, bare feet and natural movements, Isadora Duncan created a sensation in early 20th century dance. But Duncan also created a sensa tion as a social activist, struggling for women’s rights and criticizing mod ern society, culture and education. This fall, members of the The Moving Company, the University of Nebraska at Omaha’s modern dance troupe, will celebrate Duncan. Wednesday, the company will perform two Duncan works from the 1920s, “Scherzo” and “Schubert Waltzes,” on UNO’s campus. In “Scherzo,” dancers wear flow ing white garments and hair garlands. The movement is both celebratory and playful and features muses and children. “Schubert Waltzes” is seven min utes of elegant, flowing, round move ments featuring dancers in 1920s gowns of burnt-out velvet. The company started rehearsing the pieces in August when New York based artist Carol Mezzacappa visit ed the UNO campus to restage them. Wednesday’s performance takes place at the UNO Art Gallery, located in the Weber Fine Arts Building at UN-O. The event is part of the “Crossing the Threshold” exhibit, which honors women artists who were born in or before 1928. Catcher Gus Sinski (John C. Reilly) and Tigers’ owner, Gary Wheeler (Brian Cox), are the best illustrations of stock characters used to compen sate for the lack of script and charac ter development. Both are given few lines, yet expose their characters through generic and cliched personas. The cliches continue, which may be director Sam Raimi’s intention. Perhaps he intended the film to be completely simple in hopes that audiences could relate to the simple characters without having to reach too far into any intellect. In actuality, this intention under mines the audience’s intelligence. Either way, it’s a lose-lose situation that lacks the substance and strength present in Costner’s “Bull Durham.” “For Love of the Game” does succeed in providing a look into an aging man’s priorities and passions.
