ASUN may take voting to the Web i ■ A committee will investigate the change that could happen as early as ; next spring. By Veronica Daehn Staff writer It may be easier for students who haven’t cast votes in previous ASUN elections to express their opinions in the near future. , Although it probably won’t hap pen this year, ASUN President Andy Schuerman said the implementation of online voting for Association of Students of the University of Nebraska elections is right around the comer. A committee is being formed to gather more information about mov ing the voting process for ASUN elec tions onto tlnrlnternet, Schuerman said, and if iu, goes well it could hap pen as earlV as next spring. “Thi&_wWdn’t be a huge under taking in manpower or money,” Schuerman said. “The technology’s there. The expertise is there.” Schuermah said he was surprised to hear that changing the voting process was possible but also said he didn’t want to rush things. “Because of the scope, moving hastily might not be the best course of action,” he said. ASUN bylines dictate that online voting would need senate approval before the end of first semester and agaimat the beginning of second semester to be used in this spring’s elections. Schuerman said there was proba bly not enough time to completely work out the details and have the sen t ate vote on it by next semester. Instead, the ASUN president Correction The UNL department of ethnic studies moved into new offices locat ed in the former Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity house last week. In a story in Friday’s Daily Nebraskan, the department was omitted from the offices listed as moving into the building. : would like to lay a “solid foundation and great base” for next year’s execu tive board to approve the process. Donna Liss, director of UNL Information Systems and Services, said her department would help ASUN implement the new procedure. “We would help design a system with checks and balances (to ensure) security,” Liss said. Schuerman said security and voter responsibility are two of his concerns regarding online voting. While he said he’s confident each student would be able to vote only once with his or her owsmame and ID number, he said he does not know how to control students giving their votes to someone else. By giving away votes, one person could essentially vote two or more times, he said. Schuerman said he was also wor ried about students voting without being informed on the candidates and issues. But the convenience factor could improve voter turnout in ASUN elec tions, Schuerman said. Two-thirds of students live off campus, he said, and online voting may be an incentive for those students to vote because they wouldn’t have to come to campus to do it. ASUN is looking for ways to gath er student input, especially from off campus students, who are usually tougher to contact, he said. Another advantage, which Schuerman calls conceptual, deals with ASUN improving students’ expe riences. “We want to do anything we can to show we’re adapting and reaching out (to students),”he said. “We’re trying to do something to make it better (for them).” . ..
