Saturday’s game against
California marked the dedication of
the new stadium skybox facility. At
half-time, the press box level of the
skybox was officially named the Don
Bryant Media Facility in honor of the
longtime Sports Information Director
for the Cornhuskers.
Legendary ABC broadcaster
Keith Jackson helped dedicate the
media facility. A tribute to Bryant by
Jackson was shown on the
Huskervision screens, after which
Jackson presented Bryant with a
plaque to hang in the media facility.
Bryant served as NU’s sports
information director from 1963 to
1993 and worked for the Athletic
Department for a total of 36 years
before retiring in 1997.
■
Saturday’s crowd of 77,617 was
an all-time Memorial Stadium high.
The record crowd was due in part to
the addition of 1,300 seats during off
season improvements to the stadium.
The new record easily bettered the
old mark of 76,663 set against
Oklahoma in 1987.
' ■
Tight end Tracey Wistrom caught
two passes for 102 yards against
California. One of his receptions was
a 70-yard touchdown from Eric
Crouch in the second quarter.
Wistrom was the first Cornhusker
tight end to have 100 yards in recep
tions in one game since Johnny
Mitchell had 137 yards receiving on
seven catches vs. Oklahoma in 1991.
Matt Davison, who was the last
Nebraska receiver to gain 100 yards
(i 67 vs. Texas A&M last year, a
school record), extended his streak of
consecutive games with a catch to 19.
Davison had one reception for 18
yards against Cal.
■
After two games, the Nebraska
defensive unit has not given up a
point. The defense shut out California
on Saturday and allowed Iowa to
score only on a blocked punt in the
season opener.
In the two contests the
Cornhusker defense has given up
only 314 yards, including a meager
97 yards rushing. Opponents have
only 16 first-downs and are 6-of-32
on third-down conversions. In addi
tion, the defense has forced six
turnovers.
■
Punter Dan Hadenfeldt booted a
career-best 73-yard punt in the first
quarter. The punt traveled from the
back of Cal’s end zone to the opposite
23-yard-line before being downed.
Amazingly, the punt actually traveled
approximately 90 yards in the air
(from 10 yards behind the goal line to
the opposite 20-yard-line) before
landing and bouncing backwards.
For the game Hadenfeldt punted
six times, averaging 49.5 yards per
punt. He trapped Cal deep in its own
territory three times, with kicks
downed at the Cal 8, 9, and 12-yard
lines.
Freshman place-kicker Josh
Brown converted his first career field
goal, a 37-yarder. He was also perfect
on five PATs.

It’s a season of firsts for the
Husker men’s and women’s golf
teams.
This will be the first year that the
women’s fourth annual Big 12 Fall
Preview, today and Tuesday, will be
held in Lincoln. It is also the first
time since 1983 that the women’s
team has competed at the Lincoln
Country Club course.
“I like the course. It’s pretty
short, and it’s also pretty tight,” senior
Elizabeth Bahensky said. “We’ve
been practicing out there, so I think
everyone’s pretty used to it by now.”
All of the Big 12 schools will be
competing in the 54-hole tourna
ment. Texas is the only Big 12 school
ranked in the top 10, at No. 6. Texas
also has two players ranked in the top
25 - No. 5 Randi Meadows and No.
23 Kristin Dufour.
“Texas is a very deep and talented
team,” Women’s Coach Robin Krapfl
said.
Oklahoma State is close behind at
No. 11 and has Maria Boden ranked
at No. 9 in the standings. The last two

Big 12 Previews have been won by
Oklahoma State.
“Year in and year out, Oklahoma
State has always been a solid team,”
Krapfl said.
The women’s starting five all
return from last fall, including
Bahensky, junior Amy Roux, sopho
mores Sarah Sasse and Carla
Fogelberg and freshman Amanda
Krane.
“All five are experienced and
keep the ball in play,” Krapfl said.
“We have an excellent short
game.”
Bahensky, No. 38 in the presea
son rankings, is a stronghold for the
team.
She said consistency is her
strength.
The first two rounds of the tour
ney will begin today at 8:30 a.m,,
while the final round will be complet
ed Tuesday morning, also at 8:30 a.m.
As for the men’s team, this will be
the first season for most of the players
- four out of five are freshmen.
The Huskers will play host to the
Fairview Club Invitational at
Firethorn Golf Club today and
Tuesday in competition against
Wichita State, Kansas, Air Force,
California, Memphis, Colorado,
Louisiana-Lafayette, Colorado State,
Missouri and Washington State.
Today’s round and Tuesday’s round
both begin at 8 a.m.
The starting five for tomorrow’s
tournament will be sophomore Seth
Porter-and freshmen Robert Arthur,
Kevin Bryson, J.J. Sullivan and Jim
Troy. Freshmen Dean Beste, Andy
McCabe and Mike Vanier will play as
alternates.
