By Jason Hardy Senior staff writer It was circa 1992, and almost every one was into rayon. Shows like “Parker Lewis Can’t Lose” and “In Living Color” were set ting trends in music, fashion and come dy. MC Hammer was smokin’ on the dance floor, Richard Marx was still around, just kickin’ it, and Nirvana was poised and ready to take over the world. But among those already tuning out the neon-clad comedic blitzkrieg and resisting the flannel wool that was soon to be pulled over everyone’s eyes were five guys in an Iowa City garage. Not only were they tuning out the typical ’90s culture, they were tuning into ideas that were already 30 years old. They were, and still are, the Bent Scepters, a modern take on 1960s garage pop rock ’n’ roll with hints of early R&B. Some have dubbed it “secret-agent-garage-surf,” and many have tried to file it under something, but like any recycled product, it’s hard to figure out exactly what it is now. For Doug Roberson, singer/gui tarist for the Bent Scepters, it’s all just entertainment. “We’ve never professed to be any thing more than just fun,” he said. “This is mostly based on an appreciation of the Beatles, the Stones and Elvis. I always liked the music, clothes and design of that era.” Initially, Roberson was in a band called Head Candy, a blend of the pop riffs of Husker Du with the noisy song structures of Sonic Youth, but found he had more fun playing old-school rock ’n’ roll and mod music like the Kingsmen, the Troggs or the Zombies. “When I first Was learning how to play guitar, I wanted to learn how to play like Joe Perry from Aerosmith, and I just couldn’t figure it out,” Roberson said. “But I put on some Kinks records L ___ Concert Preview djjj jLa Hm Facts 4PP Who: Bent Scepters Where: Duffy’s, 1412 0 St. When: Sunday, 10 p.m. The Skinny: Band brings ‘60s rock ‘n’ roll to Lincoln. and some early Stones stuff, and I was like ‘Wow, I can play this.’ “Now I could figure out how to play an Aerosmith song. I just don’t want to.” The Scepters know they’re not breaking new ground musically, and they’ve never claimed to be musical geniuses. (At the same time, whoever invented the slide probably didn’t call it his or her finest piece of architecture, but slides sure are fun.) “We want to take that (’60s culture)* I recycle it, add some of our own things and put it back out there again,” Roberson said. “We didn’t reinvent die wheel, but the chrome on the mags is just a little more stylish now.” Oddly enough, just like the bands of the early ’60s, the Bent Scepters have evolved in their sound over the past decade. Instead of sounding early ’60s, they now sound late ’60s. Of course, there’s little room to maneuver in a genre that has already happened. The Scepters’ latest release, “Hellevator Music,” is decidedly low fi. But despite some of its mellow over tones, there is still a big rock ’n’ roll foundation. It’s something that gets you moving, and when it comes to playing live, Roberson said, it’s time to rock out. “Our shows are pretty in-your-face and high energy. “Oh yeah, we’re a loud and obnox ious rock band.” I Mistakes Happen Emergency Contraception is available at Planned Parenthood- For more information call: 2246 uO” Street Clinic - 441-3300 3705 South Street Clinic - 441-3333 I www.teenwire.com www.piannedparenthood.org Planned Parenthood of Lincoln * Caring • Affordable • Confidential • needed: Campus Operations Manager * Earn great money * Excellent resume builder * Flexible Schedule * Gain Management and Marketing experience rsity.com Study Smarter L_•'_ j | View Classified ads on the web at: DailyNeb.com 200s Far sale ‘99 Bikes On Sale All ‘99 bikes on sale now!
