Nebraska’s 42-7 victory over Iowa on Saturday was the identical score as the last time the two teams met in 1982. NU Quarterbacks Coach Turner Gill was the Comhuskers’ quarterback and NU Quarterbacks Coach Chuck Long was Iowa’s quarterback. NU now holds a 25-13-3 all-time record against the Hawkeyes. ■ Sean Applegate’s 47-yard touch down reception in the third quarter was his first catch since die opening game of the 1997 season against Akron. His previous long catch was nine yards in that same Akron game. Senior tight end T.J. Debates also caught a career-long 18-yard pass. Three true freshmen saw action in Saturday’s game including snap per John Garrison, free safety Taylor Gehman (on the punt team) and left guard Toniu Fonoti. ■ The 42-7 victory marked Nebraska’s 14th-straight home opening win. The last opening game loss was a 17-13 loss to Florida State on Sept. 7,1985, in Lincoln. NU defeated Louisiana Tech 56-27 last year in Frank Solich’s first open er as NU’s head coach. ■ Eric Crouch was ABC/Chevrolet’s player of the game. A $1,000 scholarship grant was given to the university in his honor. Crouch carried the ball five times for 92 yards and scored three touchdowns. He also threw for 67 yards, including a 38-yard comple tion to Matt Davison. DeAngelo Evans became the 48th Husker to go over the 1,000 yard mark for his NU career with 69 yards Saturday. Evans now has 1,063. ■ NU sported an improved offense in the opening game. The offense’s 536 yards of total offense were more than all of the 1998 games except Kansas. The Huskers’ 196 passing yards would have been the third best total last year. NU’s 347 rushing yards would have ranked fourth out of 1998 games. ■ Split end Matt Davison extend ed his streak of games in which he has caught at least one pass to 18. He had four catches for 69 yards. ■ In the first punts of his career, senior walk-on Dan Hadenfeldt punted 33 yards to the Iowa 3-yard line (downed by Randy Stella); 54 yards to Iowa 4 (tackle by DeJuan Groce); 45 yards (1 yard return to the 20); but was blocked on his last attempt (by Doug Miller; Tim Dodge returned for Iowa’s only touch down). All three of Hadenfeldt’s kickoffs were touch backs into die end zone. Notebook compiled by senior writer Darren Ivy NU trounces Iowa after a sluggish start By Darren Ivy Senior staff writer IOWA CITY, Iowa - Eric Crouch went silent to the media for the week leading up to die Iowa football game, but on Saturday, he spoke volumes with his play off the bench. * Crouch scored three touchdowns, including Nebraska’s first and only score in die first half, as the Huskers rolled to a 42-7 victory. But after the game, die sophomore from Millard North continued his silence with the media - which began after Bobby Newcombe was named die starting quarterback last week. Crouch uttered a few words to a handful of TV cameras following Saturday’s game and then trotted off the Kinnick Stadium field to a loud round of applause from the large contingency of NU fans in attendance. i : The way Crouch played and han dled himself on the field drew praise from I-back DeAngelo Evans, another Husker player who has had to deal with adversity. ‘To be honest, I was so happy to see (Eric) play the way he did,” said the junior I-back, who rushed for 69 yards on 13 carries. “He’s had a really tough week. Nothing against Bobby, Bobby is our guy, but I was really haj$y for Eric out for “If you look at his heart, it is big. He very well could have been the starter, but he took a back-seat role. I am very proud of fre way he played.” After die game, Coach Frank Solich said his quarterback-rotating scheme went as he had hoped it would - and said he planned to continue the system Please see HUSKERS on 14 -——i Football Game Review IS**1 f Gelrarta lawa No. Name Yds Avg TD No. Name Yds Avg TD 7 Eric Crouch 92 18.4 3 47 Jeremy Allen 2 2.0 0 No. tone No Yds TD ^N^Narne No Yds TD Passing Passing No. Name Att Cmp Int Yds TD No. Name Alt Cmp Int Yds TD 7 Eric Croudi 5 3 0 68 0 18 Scott Mullen 3 0 0 0 Q Gun Stats HH law Mwa Iowa Rushing attempts 26 Interceptions 1 1 Ruslmiy yards Penalties/yards 6/ §7 0/0 r Passing attempts 30 Punt returns / yards 6 / 83 3/38 Passing yards 196 112 Time of possession 35:55 24:05 Total yards 543 169 Fourth-down conversion 1of2 Oof 0 Scoring Summary fEZST* or «» T« Iowa 0 0 0 7 7 Team Qtr Scoring play Plays-yards Score MU 3 Applegate, Sean 47 yd. run 3,56 14 0 NU 4 Newcombe, Bobby 5 yd. run 13,73 28 0 NU 4 Crouch, Eric 21 yd. run , 5,80_ 420 MattHaney/DN .•> ' • *• v cA/ivy : A £*5C.‘Av f-*:'? ^iAA ^A
