Miller takes on starting duties MILLER from page 9 looks forward to the challenge. Running Backs Coach Dave Gillespie didn’t want to make any comparisons between Miller and past fullbacks. “Willie is Willie, and this is a new year,” Gillespie said. “We have been very pleased with him. He has demonstrated those things that you want from a fullback. He knows the offense well, and his spot is one where you must have a feel for the offense.” Along with added responsibili ty, Miller has taken a more active leadership role, Gillespie said. Kingston said Miller is an easy guy to get along with. He lightens things up, Kingston said. “Sometimes, we take things too serious, and he is always cracking jokes to keep us loose and make things fun.” Miller even jokes with Solich about going back to 1-back. “He just smirks,” Miller said, “and says, ‘No, Willie.’” I m' — nasaft-._"N B^ ** ^machines computer - Bf ^ SrNSjBboofc”1^ ^ ■ ♦Zero Interest, no payments lor 6 month* on Computers, Pushioss MacMnos ini Furniture purchases ot $299 or more made wlte the Office Depot “Technology Card* - a consumer credit card. She will probably get her wish. After all, it can’t get much worse than her team’s devastating 15-4,15-8, 15-0 blowout loss to Nebraska in last year’s US Bank Invitational at the NU Coliseum. The match left the Gators physical ly and mentally drained after three matches in two days and left Wise angri ly reeling about Nebraska Coach Terry Pettit’s scheduling tactics. Wise implied that Pettit intentional ly scheduled Florida to play NU in the last game of the tournament, when the Gators would be worn down (which she said they were). She commented after that match that if she had the chance to do the same thing when Nebraska came to Florida, she would do so. “I called Terry afterward and apolo gized for those statements,” Wise said. “I think, if anything, my main regret is that we didn’t give the Nebraska players the focus and spotlight they deserved. They were a great team. We just didn’t play our best volleyball.” However, Wise said her team is eager to come back to the Coliseum for 44 I think, if anything, my main regret is that we didn -t give the Nebraska players the focus and spotlight they deserved. They were a great team.” Mary Wise Florida volleyball coach Friday and Saturday’s pre-conference season tournament, which will get under way with the No. 8 Gators’ match against No. 1 Penn State Friday at 5 p.m. No. 3 Nebraska and No. 6 Pacific will square off in a 7 p.m. match. The winners will advance to Saturday’s 7 p.m. tournament final, which will fol low the consolation match at 5 p.m. Wise said the motivation behind her players’ excitement for making the trip go beyond playing against marquee teams in a marquee arena. She also admitted she is not quite as thrilled to come here as her players. “As a coach, I’d rather do this in a month, because I’m not sure we’re ready,” Wise said. “But the players are all for playing because they get a chance to get away from practice. “But it’s a great opportunity for us to see where we are. We will come out of this tournament a better team than if we would’ve just had practice over the weekend,” she said. The reason for Wise’s hesitancy to expect a great turnout from her team is the loss of four starters from the 1998 team. “There are definitely some spots to fill, and we have a lot of inexperience,” Wise said. “We’re a little green in some areas.” But don’t expect a Florida lineup thin with talent. The Gators come into the 1999 sea son fresh off of their third straight NCAA Final Four appearance, where they lost to eventual national champion Long Beach State in the semifinals. In fact, Florida will aim to go undefeated in the Southeastern Conference for the seventh time in eight seasons. “What Mary does such a good job at year-in and year-out is highlighting her talent,” Pettit said. “You always expect to see good athletes on the other side of the net when you play Florida.” A large portion of the talent that made up the 1998 team, which finished 35-3, returns in All-America candidates ~ Jenny Manz, a right-side hitter, and set ter Jennifer Sanchez. Nebraska junior All-America out side hitter Nancy Meendering knows plenty about the level of play Manz and Sanchez will bring to the court. She was trained with the two in Lake Placid, N.Y., and competed with them on the U S. World University Games team in Spain. “Manz is very physical and vocal player and a lot of fun to play with,” Meendering said. “It won’t be very much fim playing against her.” Nebraska may not face the Gators this weekend, depending on which teams win the Friday games, but the two won’t have to wait long if they don’t clash this weekend. The two are scheduled to play Sept. 5, at Florida’s SunTrust Invitational in Gainesville, Fla. - in the final game of the tournament - just as they did in Nebraska’s tournament last year. Any chances that Wise may be looking for revenge from last year’s tizzy in Lincoln? “No, not at all,” Wise said. “We have nothing but respect for Nebraska. We always look forward to playing them. They’re the program we use as a model of success to go by at Florida.”
