|v By Jake Bleed Senior staff writer Starting Nebraska wingback ShSvin Wiggins was arrested Friday by the Lancaster County Sheriff’s office and charged with sexual assault of a child. Wiggins, 24, was arrested with Floyd Brown III, 22, after a three week investigation by the Sheriff’s office concluded the two fondled two 14-year-old girls July 25th and 26th at the girls’ home on East Pioneers Blvd. Wiggins was charged with one count of the class III felony while Brown was charged with two counts. According to a Sheriff’s office press release, the two accompanied another man - a boyfriend of a third resident - to the house. He has not been charged in the incident. While at the house, Wiggins and Brown made “inappropriate sexual contact” on two 14-year-old girls, the July heat may have caused train derailment The cause of a Burlington Northern Santa Fe coal train derail ment July 28 near the intersection of 14th Street and Highway 2 is still under investigation. Three cars fell off the tracks, damaging the rails and blocking traf fic around the intersection. No one was injured. ^ Burlington-Northern Santa Fe spokesman Steve Forsburg said the extreme July heat could have warped the rails along the track, contributing to the accident, but he is still unsure of the actual cause. July heatwave claims Lincoln man A 75-year-old man, who died July 28, was Lincoln’s first and only heat related death in a heatwave that claimed hundreds of lives nationwide. Herman Kehm was found dead in his Lincoln trailer around 7 p.m. Police officers at the scene reported the trailer’s thermostat at 110 degrees. Lincoln Police Department Public Information Officer Katherine Finnell said Kehm’s core body tem perature was 105 degrees when offi cers arrived. Kehm’s air conditioner had appar ently stopped working the day before. Former NU player arrested three times during summer Former Nebraska linebacker Leroy Etienne was arrested three times this summer on charges includ ing burglary and disturbing the peace. According to police, on June 21, Etienne received $5 and a ride from a 32-year-old man to a home at 15th and F streets. After leaving the car, Etienne grabbed the car keys from the 32-year-old’s hand and drove off in his 1994 green Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme, police said. Etienne was arrested a short time later and charged with robbery. On July 17, police said they caught Etienne removing a window air conditioner from an apartment at 1538 G St. He was arrested for attempted burglary. Etienne was arrested Aug. 10 after he allegedly entered a home at 611 S. 20th St. and took a wallet and a bottle of wine. Police arrested him a short time later with the aid of a police dog. Etienne was a UNL four-time let ter winner between 1985 and 1988. He played briefly in the NFL for the San Francisco 49ers. Argument led to spraying of house with pesticide After a heated argument with his neighbor, pesticide professional Friedhelm Freytag, 530 S. 38th St., sprayed his neighbors’ home and dri veway with about forty gallons of commercial pesticide on July 10, police said. Apparently angry over the fire works his neighbor was firing near their homes, Freytag mixed 20 gal lons of malathion with an equal amount of water before using a pow erful hose to spray the mixture over his neighbor’s house, police said. Commonly used against a variety of insects, malathion’s recommended dilution ranges from a teaspoon to a tablespoon per gallon of water. Eight people left the area suffer ing from symptoms of chemical poi soning such as vomiting, shortness of breath and chest pains. Freytag was cited for creating a pub lic health hazard and is awaiting trial. Cemetery vandals cause $250,000 in damages Vandals struck Wyuka Cemetery, 3600 O St., Aug. 4, causing an esti mated $250,000 in damages. No arrests have been made. Thirty-nine monuments were damaged in the incident. Wyuka spokesman Todd TerMaat said the vandals appeared to have targeted a historic section of the cemetery. TerMaat said two angel statues, one of which looked over former Nebraska Gov. Samuel McKelvie’s grave, were “severely damaged,” and the remains of one were scattered over a wide area. A $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of individuals involved has been posted. : Four men await trial for Pickinpaugh murder The four Lincoln men charged with crimes relating to the February murder of 17-year-old Brandon Pickinpaugh are awaiting trial in Lincoln. Derek Graves, Jeremy Kurtzer and Jedidiah Ngirchoimei are charged with Pickinpaugh’s murder. Another Lincoln man, Dennis Sciscoe, was arrested for concealing evidence relating to the crime. All four pleaded not guilty to their individual charges. Pickinpaugh’s body was found Feb. 19 in die McDonald’s parking lot in Van Dorn Plaza at 48™ and Van Dorn streets. The Southeast High School student was shot in the head. Choma awaits trial for Higgins murder Another Lincoln man, Kenneth Choma, also awaits trial after being charged with killing David Higgins April 5. Choma pleaded not guilty in May. Higgins was shot in the groin after struggling with Choma over a gun in front of Higgins’ home. Higgins was hospitalized in critical condition and died of his wounds three days later. His death changed the charge against Choma from felony use of a firearm to manslaughter. Depositions in progress for man accused of murder Depositions are in progress in the murder trial of Dat Nguyen, accused of killing Betty Bich Tran,. 34, on April 12. Nguyen pleaded not guilty to the charge. A coworker of Nguyen, Tran was found strangled in her Lincoln apart ment. ■ She had apparently refused to have sex with Nguyen. The two worked together at Farmland Foods in Crete. Compiled by senior staff writer Jake Bleed press release said. The girls made their allegations against Wiggins and Brown July 29th. Wiggins? accompanied by his lawyer, turned himself in to the Sheriff’s office Friday. Brown was arrested later the same day at his home. If convicted, Wiggins faces up to five years in prison and a $ 10,000 fine. Solich said Wiggins will not play or practice while the inci dent is investigated. The suspension comes after Wiggins won a rare sixth year of eligi bility from the NCAA. Wiggins shared the role of starting wingback last year with Lance Brown. ' Currently a graduate student at UNL, Wiggins graduated last year with a degree in family and consumer sciences. Wiggins left Lancaster County Jail Friday after posting a $1,000 bail, 10 percent of $ 10,000, the amount of the original bond. His next scheduled court appearance is Sept. 8.
