Films, food at big bash By Kimberly Sweet Senior staff writer For new and returning UNL students, homesickness or longing for summer days is possible this weekend. Boredom, however, is not. Thanks to a plethora of activities on campus or nearby, students shouldn’t have a hard time filling the days meeting new people, listening to music or getting some good eats. On Friday and Saturday nights, NU Directions will hold its first ever back-to school bash. The events start Friday night with free movies at midnight at the Star Ship Theater, located at 1311 Q St. Students can choose between “Notting Hill,” “Austin Powers: the Spy Who Shagged Me” and “Entrapment.” Admission is free with a student ID. The events on Saturday begin at 10 p.m. with a DJ and games in front of the Nebraska Union. Students can partici pate in Gladiator Joust and sumo wrestling or climb a Velcro wall. From midnight to 2 a.m., UNL faculty and staff will serve students free pancakes. NU Directions student coordinator Chris Linder said the group is putting on the event to start off the year on a happy note. “We want to kick off the school year with something positive,” Linder said. The group, which pro motes alcohol awareness and responsible drinking, hopes to make the event a tradition. Students also can take in some live music and fried food downtown this weekend at the Rock ‘n Runza Block Party. P Street will be blocked off from 14th to 16th streets for the party, which celebrates Runza’s 50th anniversary. Friday starting at 7 p.m., the bands One More Time and Rumble will play. At 10 p.m., Three Dog Night will take the stage, which will be located on Centennial Mall. On Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., there will be a free family festival. Food vendors will be present on the grounds. Bands will begin playing at 5 p.m. The Nebraska Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame will play music from the ’50s and ’60s, followed by the Fabulous Formaldehydes and the Little River Band. Food coupons for the event will be available at the back-to school bash. Theresa Latosh, director of marketing for Runza International, said she is expecting as many as 15,000 people at the event. She hopes most will be students. “We are expecting that since students are coming back this weekend, it will be a great activity for them,” Latosh said. Tickets for the Rock ‘n Runza Block Party are avail able at all Runza restaurants and Homers. They cost $6 for a one-day pass and $10 for a two-day pass. Tickets cost $8 at the gate. Construction projects abound By Kimberly Sweet Senior staff writer With a ceremonial splash of water gurgling out of the new Broyhill Fountain last spring, the univer sity celebrated the completion of the renovations to the Nebraska Union. The completion of the union project meant an end to the invasion of construction workers and equipment in students’ main hangout on campus. But the presence of fences, bulldozers and con struction workers will not disappear anytime soon, said Howard Parker, UNL Facilities Planning and Construction manager. “It’s going to cause some inconvenience to put it mildly, but it’s going to be worth it,” Parker said. “In six years’ time, our campus will be much improved.” Much of the construction will be new structures on campus. The Esther L. Kauffman Academic Residential Center and a building to replace Lyman and Bancroft halls will be completed by 2001. Projects are scheduled to renovate buildings whose infrastructures are falling into disrepair. The building boom, the biggest since 1960, comes when many buildings need maintenance. “Our campus is an aging campus,” Parker said. “There is a whole generation of buildings, falling into disrepair.” Thanks to $60 million approved by the Nebraska Legislature for deferred maintenance projects, the needed renovations can be done. The University of Nebraska-Lincoln has had large donations to fund projects such as the Kauffman Residential Center, the Winslow and Irene Van Brunt Visitors Center and a new building for the Mary Riepma Ross Film Theater. Parker said that most of the big projects being planned will be done or started during the next six * years. Projects beginning this fall include: ■ Tearing down the International Affairs and the Summer Sessions offices on R Street. After asbestos removal, crews will clear the area between 13th Street and the Temple Building to build the Ross Theater and Welcome Center, said Tracy Aksamite, project manager. The offices will move to the newly remodeled 420 University Terrace, the old Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity house. ■ Love Library South infrastructure renovation will begin this fall, said Clark DeVries, project manager. A penthouse will be built on top of the library for a new air handling system. Administrative offices will be moved upstairs, and the Great Plains collection will be moved for more reading rooms. The entrance will also be updated. To accommodate the library construction, a new book drop was added on the west side of campus in the parking lot south of Architecture Hall. ■A new building will be built between Henzlik and Mabel Lee Hall. This building will replace Lyman and Bancroft halls. Construction is sched uled to start in November and slated to be complet ed in May 2001. The two old halls will be demol ished once construction on the replacement build ing is complete. 200s For sale IBM Model 70, 386/25mhz, monitor and printer, $195. Call 466-2258.
