While a load of pressure was taken
off Josh Plisch when he verbally com
mitted to play football for Nebraska in
die fall of2000, an entirely new batch
of pressure has already begun to pile
on.
An offensive lineman from
Rothschild, Wis., Plisch will be looked
upon this fall to help D.C. Everest
High School defend it’s title in
Wisconsin’s largest class.
“The pressure now is to come back
out and win a state championship,”
said Plisch, a senior-to-be. “We’ve
won 35 straight conference games.
There’s definitely pressure to perform.
I feel it’s been put on me to lead this
team and win this thing.
“I really need a lot of focus and
concentration on what I need to do
here. That’s why I decided that I would
make my decision before the season
starts.”
The 6-foor-4,290-pounder said he
made his decision Monday after visit
ing both the Nebraska and Minnesota
campuses last weekend. Minnesota
had also offered him a scholarship.
Though both schools had great
facilities, Plisch said the deciding fac
tor was tradition.
“It came down to, are you going to
take a chance with a program that is
up-and-coming, or jump into a pro
gram that’s been solid for 30 years?”
Plisch said. “I felt more at home at the
Nebraska program. I feel like I’m
walking in the same atmosphere that
I’m in now.”
Plisch, who benches 335 pounds
and runs a 5.0 hand-timed 40-yard
dash, said he was recruited by the
Comhuskers as a guard and a center,
but could end up playing anywhere on
the line.
Nebraska has now received at least
seven commitments from high school
athletes for the 2000 season. But the
fact that six others had already com
mitted didn’t play into Plisch’s deci
sion.
“It’s a compliment to the pro
gram,” Plisch said. “It’s reloading to
go out and win a couple more national
championships. A lot of programs
won’t do that - especially with a line
man. For a program to offer me as
soon as they did, that’s great. It gives
them an edge.”
Also giving their word to play for
the Huskers within the last two weeks
were: DeWayne Long Jr., an I-back
from West Des Moines, Iowa; Steve.
Kriewald, a fullback from North
Loup-Scotia; and Ira Cooper, a line
backer/I-back from Omaha Westside.
