    UNL officials warn
against alcohol use
By David Wilson
Staff writer
If you see Rosemary Blum, it’s
probably too late — a wrong decision
has already been made.
Unfortunately, Blum said, many
students arrive on campus for the first
time believing the norm is to break
the rules.
As UNL’s director of judicial
affairs, Blum hopes that incoming
students will be familiar with the stu
dent code of contact and will think for
themselves in an effort to avoid a
punishable offense.
The most common problem Blum
sees, of course, is on-campus drink
ing.
“I wish we <*could somehow
change the culture,” Blum said.
“Folks think that when they come to
college that they’re supposed to
drink. That’s not really the way it is.
They shouldn’t come in here thinking
they have to drink. There’s so much to
do around here that doesn’t involve
alcohol.”
But even someone that is not
drinking can be punished if they are
caught in an on-campus room where
alcohol is present. Disciplinary
actions, Blum said, can range any
where from a verbal warning to
expulsion.
“By the time they see me,” Blum
said, “they’ve already made the
wrong choice and we will have to
impose consequences for
inappropriate behavior.
“A lot of times, they
claim they don’t know the
rules, but the way the uni
versity runs, you’re
accountable.”
The student code of 1
conduct can be found in
the student bulletin or in
the judicial affairs office.
“It’s just a
matter of
reading
things that people hand you,” Blum
said. “And in the long run, they
should feel empowered to make their
own decisions. A lot of them are inde
pendent and that’s part of coming to
college - making your own dec(i
