Daily 10-9, Sun. 12 6 • www.ShopTourMall.com Involvement helps students’ success By Nicole Hall Staff writer ■' Get involved: A statement that has already been rung through the ears of all incoming students. “We know that the more students are involved in college, the more they gain from the college,” said Vincent Tinto of the National Center on post secondary teaching, learning and assessment at Syracuse University. There is also a much higher reten tion rate by students involved in student organizations, as well as those students who work on campus, take part in cam pus cultural events and student study groups, said Thomas Dake, assistant director of student involvement at UNL. More students who involve themselves on campus are likely to graduate, Dake said. The University of Nebraska Lincoln has 350 ASUN-approved stu dent organizations. With this many to chose from, many new students may become overwhelmed. Student Involvement has created a collection of questions to help students realize their strengths and farther assets as to what kinds of student organizations may be right for diem. Called the Assessment of Skills, Activities and Participation, the test has 14 categories of involvement, each cat egory creating a spoke on a wheel. The higher one scores on die assessment, the stronger they are on that spoke. “The wheel is a play off of the well rounded person,” said Dake. After the ASAP a student who is unsure of what organizations they would fit into can pick up an Involvement Guide, Studetjt" Involvement Guides are expected to be ready after Big Red Welcome, and stu dents look through the categories and mission statements of the organiza tions where they want to involve them selves. “Put off joining right away,” Dake said. He suggests sampling a variety of organizations until the student feels a good fit with their goals and the mis sion of the organization. “If you wait, you will still be taken,” Dake said. \ The motives of some UNL students for involvement is to be acknowledged. Student Affairs has created an annual award for students who involve them selves in developing their personal skills, career plans, intellectual devel opment, civic responsibility and diver sity. Many believe student leadership is a skill that is developed through experi ence. ASUN has designed a freshman program to teach freshman how to become leaders as they work their way into camp. Student Impact, previously called Freshman Action, will start in the fall. The program will have panels of stu dents leaders offering advice and tak ing questions, how to plan events and set up fund-raisers. ASUN will also have the names of about 30 campus committees and ASUN subcommittees that are in need of student representatives. Applications will be available by the second or third week in September for the committees. “Search opportunities out,” Andy Schuerman, President of ASUN said.
