Summer won’t stop
some Husker teams
By Jake Bleed
Staff writer
Several athletic teams are still
continuing their seasons, even though
the Daily Nebraskan is not.
No one said goodbye to April with
more enthusiasm than the Nebraska
baseball team. After ending March by
sweeping then No. 8 Texas in a three
game series, the Huskers went 10-9 in
April, including a loss to Texas Tech.
The No. 24 Huskers (30-15 over
all, 13-9 in the Big 12 conference)
were one of eight teams to make the
Big 12 tournament, the first time
since 1995 and the Big 8.
May ends with Regionals. The
College World Series begins June 11.
The Nebraska softball team
played its last two games of the regu
lar season against Missouri Sunday
losing both 2-1. The Huskers (27-18

overall, 9-8 Big 12 conference) split a
double header with Kansas on
Saturday behind the slugging of
junior Jennifer Lizama. The All
American hit her 11th and 12th home
runs of the year Saturday.
Softball Big 12s are scheduled for
May 15, Regionals May 21 and the
NCAA World Series May 27.
The Nebraska men’s golf finished
second in the Big 12 toumamentlast
week and jumped up to No. 14
nationally. The team lost to Kansas by
two strokes. The Perry Maxwell invi
tational tournament on May 15 is the
last of the season. The NCAA central
regional tournament is May 15. The
women’s golf team was eighth at the
Big 12 meet and is not expected to
make NCAAs.
After winning in the first round of
the Big 12 tournament over No. 32
Texas Tech, the Nebraska men’s ten
nis team lost to No. 1 seed Texas 4-1.
No. 66 NU finished the tourna
ment 10-12 overall and 5-5 in the Big
12. Thursday’s victory will help NU’s
chances of making the NCAA tour
nament this month.
Playing on the same courts in
College Station, Texas, the Nebraska
women’s tennis team also lost in the
second round to the Longhorns. After
beating Kansas 5-2, the Huskers fell
to Texas 5-0, finishing the season at
17-9 overall and 5-7 in the Big 12.
The Nebraska track team experi
enced less success that it has in the
past, but still got a Big 12 Indoor title
from long jumper Dalhia Ingram.
Shane Lavy continued his strong high
jumping career with a 7-foot-5-inch
jump this season. The women’s 4x400
meter relay team was also successful,
capturing the.title at the USA Indoor
In the outdoor season, a return
from Scott Warren has vastly helped
the cause of the Huskers as they enter
the Big 12 Outdoor Championships
and ’ the NCAA Outdoor
Championships.
