Tom Waits “Mule Variations” Epitaph Records Grade: A If “Sesame Street” ever had a house band, Tom Waits would be a great bandleader. His voice is as deep as the Cookie Monster’s, as crabby as Oscar the Grouch’s, and hints at an underlying sweetness and childlike simplicity reminiscent of Ernie. And in his prime, he could slam a six-pack down as quick as Mr. Hooper. Waits doesn’t need the “Sesame Street” gig, though, because he’s back on record-store shelves. After a six-year hiatus from music (his last release was 1993’s “The Black Rider”), Waits returns to tread familiar thematic ground, but when the music is this rich and good, who cares? “Mule Variations” is predominant ly a blues album, but with a healthy disrespect for generic blues traditions. The songs sound like a house party in a dilapidated shack in a swamp near die woods. The characters in these songs include the Eyeball Kid, the youngest of Zenora Bariella and Coriander Pyle^’s 17 children, an eyeball born without a body who can see into the future; the scary next-door neighbor who gets a lot of mail, but never goes out and is always building strange things in his garage; the man who doesn’t go to church because he wor ships the chocolate Jesus at Zerelda Lee’s candy store; and Georgia Lee, the wild teen-age girl with a good heart whose killer has never been found. Waits’ critics have contended that his reliance on imaginary characters distances him from his emotions, but for every song such as “Eyeball Kid,” there is a quiet, introspective line such as “Sun come up, it was blue and gold, ever since I put your picture in a frame.” His lyrical themes bring a liter ary bent to his songs that isn’t preva lent in much popular music. Waits combines William Faulkner and William Burroughs, Raymond Carver and Raymond Chandler with his own black humor and distinct voice to reveal one of rock music’s most inter esting personas. Oh yes, about that voice. Waits, a recovering alcoholic, hasn’t touched booze for years, but his deep rumble of a voice is still whiskey-soaked. He can spit and growl on the blues and rock numbers, and bring grace and tender ness to the ballads. The musical accompaniment is spare and minimal, yet intricate. Marc Ribot’s guitar stretches the blues idiom as far as it can go in rubbery, strange new ways. The DJ, M. Mark “The III Media” Reitman, adds turntables to a handful of songs, but Waits isn’t jumping on the Tupac-wagon. Reitman’s sound effects actually make the record sound older, with samples of scratched vinyl, roosters and creaking doors. The songs are exceptionally strong, especially “Hold On,” “Cold Water” and “Picture in a Frame.” A gospel song that closes the record, “Come On Up to the House,” may be the finest song Waits has ever record ed. With a 71-minute running time that never wears out its welcome and a stunning, solid collection of songs, “Mule Variations” was worth the six year wait. -Josh Krauter ?V'f'P(FAX) /^T a n n -r^v n $3.50/1 sw^S dn@unl.edu | T A L V T LlTlj I 1 L’ $0.15 each additional word 34 Nebraska Union % I / % I . Okay folks, now you’re wondering- why does this car have as its “most important feature" a medallion of Our Holy Lady? Well, I was driving along one day and spot ted this little black 1987 Ford Tempo, 4 door, boppin’ along with 4 nuns in it and a “for sale" sign in the window. Well, my girlfriend needed a car, so we called the number. As luck would have it, the nuns were Mexico The Daughters of the Holy Spirit, to be exact. That worked well for us, because my girlfriend is from Costa Rica and Spanish is her native tongue. Anyway, one thing led to another and we bought tne car. sister Mar garita Iturbide, as a part of the deal, left the Holy Mother medallion on the dash and said a blessing over the car before I drove away with the Holy Mary watching over me. So why do I want to sell it? Well, my girlfriend has never learned how to drive it- it’s a manual. She’s driving my car and I want it back. So we need to sell this one and buy her an automatic. This car really is a good car. It doesn’t use any oil and gets about 26mi around town. I need $1,300 for it. If you’re in the market for a good school car and want one that has a divine force watching over it. then call Tim Sullivan at 465-0026. You’ll blessed.
