Legislature Train bill takes a ride through Legislature Commuter train one step closer to being a Lincoln-Omaha reality By Shane Anthony Staff writer State senators advanced a bill Tuesday that could lead to a com muter train between Lincoln and Omaha. LB829 would create the 11 -mem ber Nebraska Transit and Rail Advisory Council, which would study the need, cost and feasibility of a commuter train between Nebraska’s two largest cities and the plausibility of such a train running statewide. Senators voted 25-0 to move the bill to the second of three rounds of debate. Omaha Sen. Shelley Kiel, the bill’s chief sponsor, said such a train could save money, create jobs and provide an environmentally friendly transportation option. In addition, she said, Nebraska could receive federal dollars - as sev eral other states do - to support the rail system. “I think it’s time Nebraska received some of this rail develop ment money,” she said. Wahoo Sen. Curt Bromm said the bill asks for no state money yet. Part of the council’s job would be to coop erate with the state Department of Roads in collecting and spending available grants, donations and feder al money. The council would have to report its findings by 2002, he said. But if the council completes the report ear lier, the Legislature can take action sooner. No one spoke in opposition to the bill, but Table Rock Sen. Floyd Vrtiska asked if the state might have to support two systems - roads that would still be tom up by truck traffic and the new train tracks. “You’re not going to take the trucks off (the highway),” he said. But Kiel said the train could help keep regular commuter traffic down, relieving congestion that costs bil lions in lost fuel and time every year. Omaha Sen. John Hilgert said the feasibility study should go forward. Questions such as cost, what materi als to use and where die track would be located need to be answered, he said. “This is an interesting way to solve a real problem,” he said.
