Matrix fails to
meet potential
as serious film

the obligatory female role, which
means she looks good in leather pants
and sunglasses. It?s a shame, really,
because Trinity’s character shows some
depth.
Coming off directing a film that
had a watertight script in “Bound,” the
Wachowski brothers unquestionably
have talent. As this is their first foray
into the world of high budget (and their
first encounter with money-first, art
later producer Joel Silver), it’s the obvi
ous place to go for action instead of
mood. It attracts people to the theater
and shows off some fine techniques for
future action films to steal.
But “The Matrix” could have been
something much more: much like
“Dark City” was, and or even (and yes,
I realize I’m pushing a little bit here)
the unforgettable “Metropolis.” And it
is possible to meld the two genres into a
film that titillates our imagination and
still get action buffs off.
