Plot drowns in shallow, overwrought Deep End of the Ocean’
By Sam McKewon
Senior editor
Just put the story of “Deep End of the Ocean”
aside for a moment, however questionably unbe
lievable it might be. That isn’t the problem.
Because it is possible, as “Deep End” asserts,
that someone could kidnap a young boy from a
mother in a hotel. It is possible that the family
could then find that young boy nine years later liv
ing (drum roll, please) two blocks away from then
new home.
In order to consider “Deep End” even watch
able, one has to at least believe this notion. And one
has to be willing to follow the movie’s principal
character, Beth Cappadora (Michelle Pfeiffer)
through her journey of depression as the mother
who lost that son. The film, directed by Ula
Grosbard (“Georgia”), asks for at least that leeway,
and it should get it
What the movie does not deserve leeway for is
die rest of the loose ends lying around the film that
never get tied up. Or the number of characters that
just pop in and then pop out, leaving important
issues unresolved. Or for the one character that has
no reason for staying through the entire film, but
does, because she’s played by Whoopi Goldberg.
So goes this movie.
The setup is simple enough and believable.
Beth goes to her high school reunion with her two
sons, Vincent, 7, and Ben, who’s 3. She leaves
them alone, and Ben is kidnapped. That’s the setup.
The next 45 minutes watch Beth spiral into
depression and one-note sadness. Not getting
much support from her husband, Pat (a doltish
Treat Williams), Beth just goes deeper and deeper
inward, neglecting to take care of Vincent or her
newborn daughter.
Pfeiffer is convincing with the guilt, but it gets
long and boring. And her conversation with the cop
trying to find her son (Goldberg), well, it’s just a lit
tle stupid.
Fast forward (literally) to nine years later,
where Vincent (Johnathan Jackson) is grown up
and Beth and the family has moved to Chicago. A
12-year-old boy (Ryan Merriman) comes to their
door asking to mow their lawn. Beth suspects it
right away: It’s her son.
So it is. And the whole kidnapping scene is tied
up so nicely and done away with so cleanly that it
doesn’t raise a ripple. The man, George Karras
(John Kapelos), who now raises the son, knows
nothing about him being kidnapped and treats him
well. No matter.
The film skips past all of the courtroom scenes
and social worker stuff and even an up-front con
versation with the boy, Sam, about what really is
going on to a scene of the new Cappadora family
eating pizza. Then, they’re in church Then, there’s
a celebration. And still absolutely no one has dis
cussed the kidnapping.
Wouldn’t that have been a wise move?
Wouldn’t that been more dramatic than pizza and a
dancing scene? Wouldn’t it have been smart of the
film to not drop the young daughter off the face of
the earth over die last 45 minutes of the movie? Or
Beth’s sister? Or Pat’s parents?
Instead, Sam/Ben gets to explain the actions of
the kidnappers. And, oh, what a son he is. He’s a 12
year-old psychologist He’s got the Cappadoras all
figured out He even says so in one line outside the
house.
Is he right? Who knows? The problem with
“Deep End” is that it never follows through on its
tense moments. No other emotion is clearly drawn
other than Beth’s.
Vincent has some terrific remorse inside him;
he’s been through hell in more ways than one. But
the movie neglects him once the other boy turns up.
The same goes for the rest of the family that tried to
Him Review
The Facts
Title: “Deep End of the Ocean”
Stars: Michelle Pfeiffer, Whoopi Goldberg,
Ryan Merriman, Treat WiHiams
Director: Ula Grosbard
Rating: PG-13 (adult language)
Grade: C
Five Words: Pfeiffer goes off deep end
pull Beth out of her funk.
Beth does the same thing. But strangely
enough, Beth is never really punished for her bad
behavior toward her family. Vincent has reason to
be angry, at himself and at his mother. In fact, he’s
the more interesting character. But the movie does
n’t care. It only cares about Beth and her lost boy.
So, it isn’t the kidnapping premise that was the
problem in “Deep End of the Ocean.” The fact that
all the movie seemed to care about was that
premise is the problem.
