Suspects in stabbing death arraigned

Lincoln’s weekend stabbing victim
was killed during an argument over
$500, according to court documents
filed Wednesday.
Only one of the three suspects
arraigned Wednesday afternoon was
charged with first-degree murder,
while the other two were charged as
accessories.
Lawrence Barry, 38, was charged
with murder for stabbing James Allen,
38, Saturday night.
Barry's bond was set at 10 percent
of$l million dollars.

20, who was charged as an accessory,
told police Sunday her husband admit
ted to killing Allen.
Irwin-Barry's bond was set at 10
percent of S100,000.
Barry went to Allen’s apartment,
1635 F St. Apt. 2, around 7 p.m.
Saturday to look for $500 and Larry
Welch, 44, who was also charged as an
accessory Wednesday.
Welch’s bond was also set at 10
percent of $100,000.
Both Welch and Irwin-Barry ini
tially lied to police about their knowl
edge of or involvement in the crime.
Irwin-Barry was charged as an
accessory after the fact for denying
knowledge of the murder. Welch is
accused of helping Barry dispose of
evidence, so he was charged with
accessory to murder.
Police documents filed in court
Wednesday describe the events leading
up to Allen’s murder.
Neighbors and the people who dis
covered the body said all three suspects
had been at Allen’s apartment
Saturday, and were the last ones seen
with Allen alive.
Police said Allen and Barry got
into an argument between 7 p.m. and 8
p.m. that ended when Allen was killed.
In the police reports filed
Wednesday, it is unclear whether
Welch was present during the attack or
when he may have left the apartment.
Barry said he had gone to the apart
ment to pick up Welch in the early
evening, but he denied any argument.
Irwin-Barry and Welch told police
that after the murder, Barry put his
clothes into a garbage sack, which
Welch threw in a trash bin behind
WaiMart, 27th and Superior streets.
At 10:30 a.m. Sunday, Allen was
found dead with two knives stuck in his
back when two friends came to his
apartment.
Welch came back to Allen’s apart
ment Sunday, and police took him to
the station for questioning, where he
admitted his involvement in the crime.
Barry and Irwin-Barry were arrest
ed around 6 p.m. Sunday near
Daywatch, 19th and R streets.
Preliminary hearings for all three
suspects were scheduled for late April:
Barry on April 21 and Irwin-Berry and
Welch on April 23.
Moeser sheds light on
‘Good Friday’ e-mail

University e-mail users who expect
an extra treat in their Easter basket this
year - an additional day off - won’t be
frolicking through the fields m search
of eggs April 2.
Instead, they will have to wait until
April 4 to receive their chocolate, jelly
beans and marshmallow chickens.
Although a few University of
Nebraska-Lincoln students tried to
unite their peers via e-mail and
requested the Good Friday holiday off,
university officials were not con
vinced.
“It’s a hoax. The e-mail is false,”
UNL Chancellor James Moeser said.
“There will be classes.”
The e-mail, originating from a fic
titious person, Dennis Shields, whose
fictitious title was University of
Nebraska Admissions counselor,
requested all UNL users of the bigred
e-mail system to forward the message,
asking for Moeser to cancel all classes
April 2.
“In order to do this, as a student
body, we must all show our strong
bond. I suggested that we should start a
cham e-mail,” the message said.
The e-mail said a meeting was con
ducted with Moeser and Associate to
the Chancellor Herb Howe, which sup
posedly resulted in the understanding.
Moeser said the meeting did not
occur.
Larry Routh, University of
Nebraska-Lincoln director of admis
sions, said Shields was not an employ
ee of his office.
“No such person exists,” Routh
said. "I guess this is proof people can’t
believe everything they read over e
mail and the Internet.”
Moeser and other university offi
cials received the e-mail Wednesday
morning.
Laughing, Moeser said whomever
the source of the e-mail was, they were
"trying to have some fun.”
Administrators said they began
working on stopping the e-mail’s dis
semination as soon as they found out.
Moeser said he was not too con
cerned about finding who started the e
mail.
"We are going to try to stop the
transmission through the bigred serv
er,” Moeser said. "Nothing more than
that.”
Dave Spanel, UNL information
services systems coordinator, said the
university has no way to moderate e
mail forwards distributed by students.
“We can't prevent e-mail being for
warded,” Spanel said. Spanel said for
warding was a normal e-mail privilege.
Spanel said however, the universi
ty does regulate distribution lists sent
e-mail users through bigred and other
university servers, pending approval
by a vice chancellor.
Moeser said he thought the e-mail
was amusing, but he encouraged stu
dents to be more productive with their
time.
"I hope students have better things
to do with their time than forward e
mails like this,” Moeser said. “I say, get
back to your studies, or do something
more worthwhile.”

Board chooses
new DN editor
From staff reports
The Daily Nebraskan’s editor in
chief for the next academic school
year was chosen Monday by the UNL
Publications Board.
Josh Funk, a senior staff writer
for the Daily Nebraskan, was select
ed by a unanimous vote.
Jeff Randall, co-design chief and
senior staff writer, and Cliff Hicks,
opinion editor, were also considered
for the editor in chief position.
After interviews and delibera
tions. Funk, a junior news-editorial
major, was chosen for the position.
Funk will bring his experience
with the Daily Nebraskan to the posi
tion, as well as experience as a
stringer for The Associated Press and
a high school reporting intern with
the Star-Herald in ScottsblufT.
Funk said he thought the board
chose him because of his vision for
the future of the Daily Nebraskan.
“Our greatest asset is the talented
staff, and I plan to use that staff to
move the paper ahead by setting
goals for the future,” he said.
Funk said he looked at the posi
tion as a new challenge.
“I look forward to taking the
paper into the next millennium and
closing out the first century of Daily
Nebraskan news coverage.”
