lion’s head above his own and constantly shift its
direction. Another performer is under about 3
yards of fabric, decorated in bright colors, that
serves as the lion’s body.
Creative touches the students can put into the
performances include story lines involving
demons, a cabbage (which symbolizes good luck
and is sometimes accompanied by a red envelope
containing money) and a “happy Buddha” charac
ter who leads and directs the lions.
In addition to serving as the lion dance spon
sor, Robertson also began a martial arts club after
students requested it. Much like die did with the
lion dance, she learned about the art in Asia.
“Whatever (my students) want to learn, I will
try to learn it and teach them,” Robertson said.
“If I can do it, they can do it,” Robertson said
with a laugh. “That’s how I feel.”
Robertson has won several teaching awards in
the past few years, including the 1998 Walt Disney
Outstanding Foreign Language Teacher of the Year
award and the 1997 Nebraska Teacher of the Year
award. Her experiences are delineated on her class
room wall, which includes pictures of her with
“NYPD Blue’s” Dennis Franz and President
Clinton.
Her commitment to teaching is enforced with
the time she puts into the lion dancers’ shows and
practices, and other celebrations of Asian culture.
Her largest project, she said, is the biennial
Chinese Kaleidoscope - a 40-minute presentation
where Chinese culture and history are combined
with music and dance.
Every two years, more than 4,000 people wit
ness the event, which features the lion dancers and
Chinese opera, martial arts and folk dance demon
strations. Robertson’s next Kaleidoscope - her
fifth-will be in 2000.
For now, she and her lion dancers are busy
preparing for a visit from members of Lincoln
High’s sister school. It will be the first time the
people who donated the school’s first lion cos
tumes will see the Lincoln students perform with
them.
Robertson speaks proudly of her students’ per
formances and hard work.
“They don’t get much out of it - just pride and
applause and self-esteem,” Robertson said.
Robertson believes their hard work is well
worth it
“You can see how much they have learned - the
respect they have developed.”
