Hopefuls accused of hiding abortion stance
WASHINGTON (AP) - An abor
tion rights group launched a series of
television ads that accuse presidential
hopefuls George W. Bush and
Elizabeth Dole of camouflaging strict
anti-abortion positions.
The two early favorites for the
Republican presidential nomination,
who have also been attacked by anti
abortion groups questioning their
commitment to the cause, are now the
target of ads bought by the National
Abortion and Reproductive Rights
Action League.
The ads, which began airing
Monday morning on stations in
Manchester, N.H., and Des Moines,
Iowa, use quotes from the pair in an
attempt to show they are opposed to
abortion. The ads accuse them of try
ing to “hide their extreme views,”
said NARAL director Kate
Michelman.
Bush, the governor of Texas, has
said he is opposed to abortion, with
exceptions only for the life of the
mother, rape and incest. Republicans
should fight for steps such as banning
late-term abortions and requiring
parental consent for abortions for
teen-agers, he said.
Dole has declined to discuss her
abortion views in any depth since
entering the presidential fray, but her
spokesman, Ari Fleischer, said she is
anti-abortion.

between two housing developments
south of Old Cheney Road.
The man told the boy to perform
oral sex, and when the boy refused, the
man performed oral sex on the boy
while masturbating.
Then the man put his shorts back
on and fled south.
The suspect is described as
between 30 and 35 years old, with a
medium build and a mustache.
Police believe the suspect may be
connected to four indecent exposures
in the area since September 1998.
Capt. Bob Wilhelm warned par
ents to watch their children.
“I would discourage parents from
letting their children play or walk
through the neighborhood alone.”
Gun fired, suspect arrested
A Lincoln man was arrested
Saturday night after he fired a gun at
another man’s head, narrowly missing.
Police were called to the basement
of a home on the 1000 block of
Charleston Street at 11:35 p.m. after a
confrontation between two men ended
with gunfire, Finnell said.
The 20-year-old victim went over
to the house to confront the suspect
about smoking marijuana in the
house, though neither of the men live
there.
The suspect, 22, responded by
pulling a .22-caliber handgun and fir
ing.
The bullet missed the man’s head,
went through the basement wall and
lodged in the building next door with
out injuring anyone, police said.
The victim left and called police.
The suspect was arrested for making
terrorist threats, discharging a firearm
in the city and the use of a weapon to
commit a felony.
