] victory I By Christopher Heine Staff writer If one could measure leadership in decibels, Monet Williams was the loud est player on the court last night in her final game in front of4,977 fans at the Bob Devaney Sports Center “I wanted to go out with a bang,” Williams said. The calm, whispering senior from Brooklyn, N. Y., led the Nebraska women’s basketball team to a 74-63 win over Kansas State (13-12 overall and 6-9 in die Big 12 Conference. Williams answered her first call as the Cornhuskers’ starting point guard with an impressive outing - 8 points, 10 rebounds, 6 assists and only a single turnover. Nicole Kubik, who switched from the point position to off-guard, said Williams was in control of the Husker offense. “She really settled us down when we got in our speed mode and just ran with our heads cut off,” Kubik said. “She really stabilizes us and gets us into what we need to be in.” During their preconference sched ule, the Huskers thrived offensively by fast-breaking off a turnover-causing full-court defense. Conference play hasn’t been that easy as the Huskers have struggled in their half-court offense. ‘Teams in this league will not let us dictate the tempo like earlier this year,” NU Coach Paul Sanderford said. The Huskers may have finally found the half-court solution they’ve been searching for with Williams play ing floor general. Sanderford said their new point guard frees up Kubik, NU’s leading scorer. Kubik led the Huskers (18-10 and 7-8) in scoring with 20 points. “Monet has the tendency to take pressure off her and get her the ball,” he said I TONIGHT! I think it has the potential to catch on.” Christo will spend the summer as the Lightning quarterback before attending medical school at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha next fall As a senior at NU last season, Christo ran for 223 yards, while passing for 261 in seven games. With only eight players per team on the field, and an 85-foot-wide field, Thomsen said, the indoor league would likely be more of a passing league. That’s fine with Christo. “People say, ‘You didn’t throw much at Nebraska,”’ Christo said horn the floor of the Poshing, “but it doesn’t take much to throw in here.” While Christo and most of the other players have seen game action within the past few years, kicker Rex Eberspacher, 39, has been working as an account executive for KFGE FM (98.1) “Froggy.” Eberspacher last saw die field in 1980 as a kicker for Nebraska. “I’m the old man here,” Eberspacher said. “That’s why they call me ‘Pops.’ I’ve been working out at Sports Courts.” Eberspacher could play a signif icant role for the Lightning as there is no punting in this game and field goal attempts can be returned “I’m probably in as good of shape as I’ve ever been,” Eberspacher said. “I’m excited about this thing.” With nearly three weeks until training camp and just over a month before the season begins, Thomsen said, the entire Lightning squad is looking forward to putting on the pads. Assistant Coach Jose Jefferson agreed “This is one of the best - if not the best - football cities in the world,” Jefferson said. “If you love the game of football, it’s going to be exciting coming in here.
