I ‘Cigarettes’ revisits early 1980s CIGARETTES from page 11 Janeane Garofalo, as well as the occasional superstar (Ben Affleck and Courtney Love). “It’s a lot of vignettes, I guess you could say,” Bramon Garcia said. “But I think that type of storytelling can be more effective than straight narrative; you are able to explore sev eral different characters and keep it entertain ing at the same time.” The vignette story line also might be attrib uted to MTY the quick-cut culture originators whose film production company helped make “200 Cigarettes” a reality. Only three years old, MTV Films has been responsible for several examples of low-end dreck such as “Varsity Blues,” “Dead Man on Campus” and the unspeakable “Beavis and Butt-head Do America. But if MTV Films does have anything going for it, it is its willingness to offer big breaks to relatively unknown filmmakers, and Bramon Garcia is a fine example. | Although she has toiled in the Hollywood system for more than a decade as a casting director, Bramon Garcia’s experience at the helm has been limited to the 1991 television mini-series “The Hidden Room.” Her close professional relationship with Oliver Stone netted her jobs as associate producer in “Natural Born Killers” and “Heaven and Earth.” Handing over a major motion picture to someone who is admittedly untested is a bit risky, but Bramon Garcia welcomed the chal lenge. “I’ve been around enough films to know how to handle myself, and working as a casting director has taught me how to work well with die actors,” she said “And a lot of directors will tell you that’s the hardest part of the job.” Another perk of having MTV’s hand in the film is its soundtrack, which culls die poppiest of pop tracks from the late ’70s and early ’80s - Nick Lowe’s “Cruel to Be Kind,” the Cars’ “Just What I Needed” and Roxy Music’s “More Than This,” to name a few. “The music is like another character in the f1m, and it helps tell the story,” Bramon Garcia said. “And just listening to it made going to work each day something to look forward to.” The music showed up in human form, as well. Decidedly ’90s group Girls Against Boys make a cameo as a dirty club band playing a cover of Earth, Wind and Fire’s “Boogie Wonderland” and authentic rock royal Elvis Costello portrayed himself. “Oh, Elvis,” Bramon Garcia said. “Everybody on the set who had the slightest knowledge of music was practically hitting the ceiling when he was around. In my mind, you don’t get much better than Elvis Costello.” But when MTV, Ronald Reagan, pop music and everything else are set aside, “200 Cigarettes” is really a movie about people who are looking for other people. “Look at every character, and you’ll see that they’re trying to find somebody else - maybe anybody else,” Bramon Garcia said. “You want to find somebody to kiss at the stroke of midnight, but you also want to find somebody who will be there in the morning, whether it’s 1981 or right now. That’s what this movie’s about” 'Beautiful’ puts spin on Holocaust BEAUTIFUL from page 11 and Joshua are the focus of die film. As long, sad faces surround him on the train, Mario tells his son how fortunate he is in being allowed to take this trip. And when they arrive at the concentration camp, and a big, German soldier begins to bark out orders about what the prisoners’ duties will be, Mario gets up to be the translator. He tells his son - and all of the other pris oners in the barracks - that what they are involved in is an rate game, with points penalties, where the tank. Mario tells his son rules are specific: says he is hungry c he wants his mother, he will lose points. Through his ploW ting, Mario is able to ' keep his son obliviousf to the fact that he is in ' a death camp. Mario’s motives are sincere, and his con-* cem for his son is obvi-: ous, which is why the^ Holocaust-lite setting, doesn’t come across as • completely vulgar - in' fact, it is completely tasteful and touching. This portion of film is not about the MattHaney/DN -"U brutality of the war and the fate of its Jewish victims. It is about the love a father has for his son, and the magic that sheer will and a little ingenuity can conjure up in tough situations. Granted, the Holocaust was more than a tough situation. But this is a fairy tale, remember? 20Qs For sail Specialized StumpJumper M2. Customized mountain bike: Syncros, avid; ringle, rocks shox Judy si, shimano xt equipped.
