Big 12 coaches look
ahead to tournament
TOURNEY from page 7
State, which is at 6-8, will make up
the No. 7-11 seeds, although the
order is not yet determined. Mizzou
and Nebraska are all deadlocked at 9
5 and still competing for one of the
top four slots. The No. 5 seed is
already slated to play Baylor in the
first round on Thursday.
Kansas moves into the inside
track for the second seed following
their win over Oklahoma State on
Monday night.
But KU Coach Roy Williams is
not so much concerned about the
seeding as the end results of league
and tournament play.
“I don’t care about the top seed,
but it is important in terms of becom
ing conference co-champions,”
Williams said. “You always like to
win championships.”
Other coaches with teams in con
tention for one of the top seeds saw
attaining the high spots as more of a
bonus.
The No. 5-12 seeds play on
Thursday, while No. 1-4 seeds start
Friday, giving them an extra day of
rest and a chance to scout the oppo
nent
Last year, only one of the top four
seeds lost Friday. That was
Oklahoma State, which dropped a
65-62 decision to Texas. Nebraska,

You have to expect
the unexpected."
Rick Barnes
Texas coach
which had the No. 4 seed, won 65-46
over Baylor in its f rst game.
“It’s real simple,” Oklahoma
Coach Kelvin Sampson said. “If
you’ve got any aspirations whatsoev
er of winning a conference champi
onship, you ve got a better chance to
win it in three games in three days
than you do playing four games in
four days.”
And with the smart money on
Texas to take the top seed and regular
season title, and the tough year that
has hit the Big 12, everyone else is
looking at the conference tourna
ment as the saving grace of NCAA
Tournament dreams, regardless of
seeding.
“It would be illogical to think that
anyone’s got the remotest of chances
(for an NCAA bid) short of winning
the conference tournament,” KSU
Coach Tom Asbury said. “It’s the
only way that any of the teams that
are seven through 12 (seeds) are
going to get into the Big Dance.”
